How to Merge Images Into a Montage to Tell a Story

How to Merge Images Into a Montage to Tell a Story

I believe that good photographs tell a story or create a mood or feeling. Sometimes, it is not possible to tell a story with a single image. In this article we will explore using multiple images to describe a single event or tell a story. Before you can merge your images, however, you'll need to adjust size, white balance and color balance. To find out how to do this, please reference my article "How to Prepare Images for Merging into a Photo Montage" (see Resources below). Then proceed on with this article to learn how to put them together.

Instructions

    1
    Create New Iamge

Create a new image with the dimensions of one of the single images prepared for merging. In this example I am using GIMP, but you can use other imaging editing software like Adobe Photoshop to create photomontages.

    2
    Open as Layers

Select and open your images as layers. In GIMP this will open each image and place them in the NEW image you just opened. It will place each image layer on top of the previous layer. If you do not use OPEN AS LAYERS, GIMP will open each image in a new and separate window.

    3
    Set Canvas Size

Each layer is tacked on top of the other. The image on top is the last layer that was opened. Notice the yellow dotted line, which frames the active layer. Before you can arrange the layers, you need to expand the canvas to be large enough to contain the images. Note the size of each image and adjust the canvas size to contain the images with a border around each, so that they are separated.

    4
    Move Layers

After you have expanded the canvas, each image can be moved to the proper position by simply dragging it and placing it in the proper spot. Use the grid and rulers to line up each image to the exact desired position in the montage.

    5
    Save Image

After you have placed the images in the proper spot it is time to save your image. Remember to pick a unique name and save the image to the proper directory on your computer.

    6
    Final Image

The final image tells the story. You can experiment with different color backgrounds by adding a background color to the canvas. "Would you like to discover digital photography techniques that carry expert photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques could help you out in doing so. To find impressive photos we first need to look at some fundamental photography techniques. The initial one I am able to share with you is identify about light. You can locate all the things regarding photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Anytime you uncover about light and in what technique it interacts with the direct environment then your shots will get much better..". You can also adjust the canvas size so the images have no space between them, but for this series I liked the black background and the separation between the images.

Creative Black & White Wall Picture Ideas

Creative Black & White Wall Picture Ideas

A picture that was taken in color takes on a completely new look when done in black and white. Some like the black and white photo for its nostalgic feel. Others prefer this type of picture because it is subject focused. The lack of color in a picture brings the eye to the subject. Black and white photos can be used with any dcor and can add an appearance of depth to your walls. "Are you looking to learn digital photography systems that carry expert photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques would likely support you out in doing so. To acquire amazing images we initially want to look at some essential photography techniques. The most important one I am able to share with you is discover about light. You can obtain everything about photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Whenever you uncover about light and in what way it interacts with the direct environment then your pictures will get superior..". Use black and white pictures to hang on your wall that tell a story, give some insight to who you are or to show extreme opposites.

Bits and Pieces of the Family

Traditional family portraits have everyone in a posed grouping and are usually very uneventful and bland. Make your family portrait in separate pictures done in black and white. Instead of traditional head shots, take a partial shot of the face of each person. Crop each picture at just enough of an angle so the family member is easily recognizable. Hang these pictures in a straight line, gallery style, in a family room or a dining room.

Your Story

Fill a wall with black and white pictures that tell a story about who you are. Pictures can include pets, hobbies, career, favorite vacations or any other subject that relates to you and your interests. Let the pictures represent these things in abstracts instead of typical photos of buildings and objects. If you love to bicycle, take a close-up picture of a spinning front bike wheel with one sneaker on a pedal. If sewing is your thing, a single large sewing needle being threaded would represent this well. Stay away from typical still life and posed pictures.

Extreme Opposites

Take a picture of a dove and place it against a black background and do the same with a photograph of a crow on a white background and hang them side by side. Use the same idea with a black car and a white car. Place a white tennis ball and a black bowling ball on opposite backgrounds. Do this with any other object or animal that comes to mind. This idea creates a wall of black and white pictures that are like negatives of each other. A white horse against a black background and a black horse against a white background will make a stunning depiction of horse power. Pictures with this type of opposite subject matter in black and white will not only make good conversation pieces but will also add dimension to your dcor.

Tips on Photographing Bald Men

Baldness was once something men tried to prevent, however in recent years bald has become a bold and stylish fashion choice. When photographing a bald subject, remember that there are certain challenges you must be aware of or pictures may not always come out as you intended. A little knowledge about lighting and angles will help you correct any potential problems when composing your shots.

Attitude

Remember that your subject may not see baldness as an affliction, so don't treat it as such. Many men shave their heads purposely. You don't want to insult a bald man by acting as though his head is a problem. Some men may want their bald head accentuated because they see it as a distinguishing feature.

On the flip side, some men who are not bald by choice may feel uncomfortable being photographed. Keep the lighting and angles in your own mind, make adjustments or ask him to move, but you don't have to point out you're doing it because of his head.

Don't ask him if he'd like to cover up his head. If he wanted to do that, he'd have worn a hat. Set him at ease by accepting him as he is and not making a fuss over his bald head.

Lighting

Consider your light source. You can use natural light or artificial light to photograph a bald head, just pay attention to the direction and the strength of the light. Any strong, direct light that shines on a downward angle onto the top of a bald head can reflect back at the camera, causing glare.

Move your subject out of direct sunlight if you're outdoors. "Do you need to know digital photography systems that bring experienced photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques could help you out in doing so. To get spectacular photographs we first need to have to look at some basic photography methods. The initial one I am able to share with you is uncover about light. You can obtain every little thing concerning photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Whenever you find out about light and in what method it interacts with the direct environment then your shots will get superior..". Soft sun in the early morning or late afternoon, when it's on an angle, is most flattering and will eliminate problems with glare. Cloudy, overcast days are also preferable. If the sun is high in the sky and beaming down, stand your subject in the shade of a tree or a building.

Avoid directly overhead light sources if photographing indoors. Move your subject out of the way of strong overhead light sources, such as track lighting or reading lamps. Lower lights on adjustable light stands to be at equal height with the subject's face. If you're using a studio lighting set up, turn off the hair light.

If you're using a flash, keep the flash at equal height, or slightly lower, than the subject's face. A diffuser on your flash will help avoid glare on the head, however not all cameras are equipped to hold a diffuser. Alternately, you can use a polarizing filter on your lens, which will intensify colors and cut down on glare.

Angles and Background

Consider the angle you are shooting from. The angle can draw more attention to the bald head, or less, depending on the desired effect. Make a bald man's forehead look shorter by shooting from equal or lower height than his head, or by having him hold his head straight to the camera or slightly tilted up. Make his head look longer and more drawn out by shooting downward from above, or by having him lower his head to the camera.

You can draw less attention to a bald head by using a light colored backdrop for fair skin, or a dark color backdrop for dark skin. Some men may wish to accentuate their bald head. In this case, you can do the opposite. Use a dark color backdrop for fair skin, and a light colored backdrop for dark skin.

Be careful if the background is busy; make sure it doesn't look like anything is "growing" out of his head by standing him in front of a sapling, lamp post or shelving with items stacked on it. In most cases, the simpler the background, the better.

How to Convert 35mm Slides to CD

How to Convert 35mm Slides to CD

Preserving your memories in a digital format on a CD is easier than you might think. While you can use an expensive digital scanner, designed to transfer images into your computer, you also can use a simple technique with a regular scanner to copy your slide images. Once the images are on your computer, its easy to convert them to a CD.

Instructions

    1

Cut a piece of thin, flat cardboard to the exact size of the scanning area on the flatbed scanner.

    2

Place a slide in the middle of the cardboard, and trace around it with a pencil. then carefully cut out the shape with a sharp utility knife.

    3

Place the cardboard on the scanner screen and tape it into place along the edges.

    4

Position a slide in the hole and place a fluorescent flashlight on top. Turn the flashlight on and run the scan to transfer the image to your computer. Repeat this process with all your slides.

    5

Edit, crop or otherwise adjust your images. You will be able to see the cardboard slide border later when you view them, so crop the border off, if desired.

    6

Place a new CD in the drive and open the folder where you saved the images. "Are you looking to discover digital photography techniques that bring skilled photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques would support you out in doing so. To become impressive images we primary want to look at some essential photography techniques. The preliminary one I am able to share with you is find out about light. You can come across all the things regarding photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Each time you uncover about light and in what method it interacts with the direct environment then your images will get better..". You can select all the images by pressing "Ctrl" and "A," or you can select only a few by holding down the "Ctrl" key while clicking on each desired image.

    7

Chose Copy from the list of menu items and select the CD drive; your disk-burning program will open. Name your CD when prompted and click OK to initiate the process.
