Position the object you want to photograph in the center of the "floor" of the light box.

Position your light source(s) so that your subject is evenly lit with no shadows. Your light box should have either holes for your light source or walls that are thin enough to allow diffused light to come through. The all-white interior of the light box will reflect light, illuminating your subject from every angle, casting no shadows except directly beneath the subject. Even these shadows will have soft edges.

Shoot your pictures. Try moving the object to shoot it from different angles. Also try changing the angle of the light source(s) for different effects. Transparent objects, such as glasses, have more depth when they are lit only from the back. Shoot lots of pictures to see what works best. If you are using a digital camera you can delete any shots you don't like.

Import your photos into your computer and crop as close as possible--unless you intend to add text over part of the background. You also might need to brighten the picture to make the background pure white if your picture will have to blend in with a white page either on the Internet or in print.

How to Produce Fake High Dynamic Range (HDR) Images

For years I have been interested in High Dynamic Range images. These images display a greater dynamic range between the lightest and darkest areas of an image. Most images have a dynamic range of about four to five f-stops. HDR images can be a range of 10 f-stops or greater. Photographers create HDR images by photographing a scene taking multiple exposures at a normal f-stop, but also at two to three f-stops underexposed. This process is called tone mapping and the images are merged in Photoshop or GIMP into one image with an expanded dynamic range exhibiting greater luminescence and detail. GIMP has a neat plug-in script called Fake HDR that allows you to expand the dynamic range without going through the rather challenging tone mapping process. *Keep in mind this is only suitable for some images and the results are not really HDR, but the effect that you can obtain is stunning.

Ensure that the hdr-eff-plus.scm file that you downloaded for the Fake HDR script is in the SCRIPTS folder before opening your test file on GIMP. This can be found at //user/application support/gimp. All scripts are stored in this folder. The scripts can be downloaded from the GIMP Plug-In Registry. After you open GIMP, click on the Sript-FU tab to select the tools.

Try the HDR EFFECT. This only allows you to adjust the black layer opacity, and as you can see, when using it full strength (50) it makes the image look like a cartoon. Yes, there is more detail, but who cares? You can adjust this to lessen the effect.

Use the FAKE HDR EFFECTS PLUS. This allows you to adjust a lot of parameters in addition to black layer opacity. You can adjust the brightness and sharpness of the soft glow effect, which expands the dynamic range of the image. You can also adjust the saturation of the image and the level of image you want in the minimum and maximum portions of the image. Unfortunately, there is no preview, so you need to render each image and undo to begin to test the range of this tool.

Adjust the saturation and brightness levels first; this will be helpful. Then adjust the dark layers and sharpness. I did this many times undoing each effect and testing the minimum and maximum levels to get an idea of what each slider actually controlled in the image.

This is the final image for now. I want to spend some time testing this application and see if I can improve the result. I like the improvement in the detail and the saturation of the colors, although I feel they might be too saturated. I also think I want to shoot an actual HDR of a scene and use the "normal" exposure with Fake HDR and then compare the results. I think I still have a lot more research and writing to do on this subject, so stay tuned.

How to Take a Photo With a Shallow Depth of Field (Sharp Subject, Blurry Background)

One of the most useful tricks to creating a powerful focus is utilizing depth of field. By creating a shallow depth of field, you keep the viewer's eyes off the distracting background and focused in on exactly what you want them to see.

Most new photographers think about composing a subject in a frame in two dimensional terms - left and right. To separate your subject from their background, it's helpful to have as much physical distance as you can between the two. Taking a photo of a person standing miles in front of a mountain will make this much easier than a person standing three feet from the wall of a building. Shallow depth of field photos can be accomplished in virtually any environment, but when you don't have much control over your camera or lens try moving your subject.

Sometimes you can't move your subject or their background, and sometimes even moving them around won't give you a dramatic enough effect. If this is the case, try moving closer to your subject. Close proximity to a subject will often give the appearance of shrinking the depth of field.

If all else fails, cheat! You can use a program like Photoshop to separate the subject from the background and artificially blur or sharpen the image. See my other tutorial for a simple way to do this.

Select your subject. Some of the most common are car lights and stars. Once you have mastered these, it will be easier to experiment with a wider array of subject matter.

Choose a location. Be sure that you are in a safe location, as carrying expensive photo equipment at night can make you an easy target. When trying to capture the motion of cars, be sure you are safely off the road. Also, catching the movement of stars requires little or no other light sources, so choose a dark location free from streetlights or cars.

Decide upon the length of time you will hold the shutter open for the first photograph. When trying to catch a moving objects, the shutter must be open long enough to catch the movement, but not so long that you overexpose the film. Start by opening the shutter for the very least amount of time you feel necessary, and add bit by bit, taking multiple photographs.

Shoot multiple images to capture the perfect photo. As a rule of thumb, the darker the subject, the more images you should shoot and the longer you should hold the shutter open. For car lights, start at 15 seconds and work your way up to 45 seconds in intervals of 15. For stars, begin with five minutes and work your way up to 40 minutes if you would like to capture the starlight tracking across the entire frame.

Work with only one or two subjects on each outing. Though night photography, particularly that of motion, requires patience and experimentation, it can yield truly beautiful and compelling imagery.
