How to Design a Photography Studio

Designing a photography studio is an exciting task for a photographer, but it can also be quite daunting. You should not only think of what gear you will need, but also how much space you need and who your clientele is. Those who shoot small product photography, for example, will require a different studio than someone who photographs people or larger objects. To make your studio as comfortable as possible, seriously consider how you work and design accordingly. This will allow you to work smoothly and focus on what you really love to do: Take photographs.

Instructions

How to Design a Photography Studio

    1

Choose the right space. Think of what type of photography you do and decide how much room you need. Generally the more space you have, the better. However, those who do product or macro photography will be setting up on a table and won't need a lot of room. Pick a space with sturdy floors so your tripod will not shake. The ceilings should be a minimum of 10 feet, to take full standing portraits and have a little leeway above the subject's head for overhead lighting. The walls should be a white to medium gray, so light will reflect well. "Would you like to discover digital photography systems that deliver skilled photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques would assist you out in doing so. To find stunning photos we primary need to look at some imperative photography methods. The most important one I am able to share with you is identify about light. You can come across everything regarding photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Whenever you learn about light and in what method it interacts with the direct environment then your shots will get better..". Avoid bright colors, as the color will cast reflections and change the look of your subject. Shooting with natural light requires large windows, which should face north for the best quality of light all day.

    2

Choose your equipment. All studio photographers need lighting equipment, so take into consideration what types of equipment you like to shoot with. Shooting with large, continuous lights will use a lot of electricity, so make sure your wiring and outlets can handle the load. You'll need a light meter if you shoot with flash units or strobes. Consider equipment like light modifiers, stands and booms for your lighting.

    3

Choose your storage. You are going to need a place to store gear while it's not in use. If you switch backgrounds or lighting equipment often, choose storage that is easy to access like a large shelving unit. Sturdy, large bins that can be stacked can be used as storage, and also carried easily if you're going on location. Label the bins so you can easily find the equipment you need.

How to Edit a Photo to Eliminate the Background & Keep the Foreground

How to Edit a Photo to Eliminate the Background & Keep the Foreground

Since the advent of computers, photo editing has become increasingly easier and faster. However, though many programs can expedite the editing process, anyone who is attempting to modify their photos should pay careful attention to light levels, pixilation and shadows when discarding the background in favor of the foreground. "Are you looking to learn digital photography methods that carry expert photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques could support you out in doing so. To become stunning images we first want to look at some imperative photography techniques. The primary one I am able to share with you is determine about light. You can obtain every little thing concerning photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Anytime you learn about light and in what way it interacts with the direct environment then your images will get much better..". Depending on the sophistication of the software, the photos may look awkward when edited purely by computer.

Instructions

    1

Sit in a dark room without direct lighting. Direct lighting makes the computer screen hard to see. Launch Adobe Photoshop on a computer. Open the photo that will be edited using Photoshop by accessing the File menu, followed by the "Open" command.

    2

Identify the objects that make up the foreground of the photo. Select the "Magic Wand" tool from the Photoshop palette. Carefully outline the perimeter of the foreground with the magic wand tool. Once the entire perimeter has been outlined, the selected object will have a blinking line around it.

    3

Choose the "Select" menu option. Click on "Inverse." Everything that has not been selected will now have a blinking line around it. Hit the "delete" key. The background of the photo will erase.

Photo Rag Printing Tips

Photo Rag Printing Tips

Photo rag is digital printing paper that is 100 percent cotton. It is used by professional and fine art photographers who want to create images that will maintain their quality for decades or more. When using photo rag paper, there are many options to consider that will affect the longevity of the print, and define the photographer's style.

Coating

Photo rag paper has a coating which helps to create a wide range of contrast and colors. "Do you want to discover digital photography approaches that carry expert photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques could guide you out in doing so. To acquire amazing pictures we primary need to have to look at some fundamental photography methods. The most important one I am able to share with you is identify about light. You can locate all the things regarding photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Each time you learn about light and in what way it interacts with the direct environment then your shots will get superior..". Make sure you are printing on the coated surface. Sometimes this surface is visually apparent; other times you may have to refer to the paper instructions to determine the correct side. Some photo rag papers are coated on both sides.

Surfaces

Surface styles for photo rag paper range from glossy to matte. In between these may be pearl, semi-glossy and luster, though the terms and resulting paper surfaces may vary between manufacturers. Consider paper surface in picturing how dark the shadows of your print should be, as glossy paper will produce more black density (known as D-Max) than will a matte paper.

Weight

Weight of paper is often described in "gsm," or grams per square meter. Higher gsm values result in thicker paper. Paper manufacturers usually offer a sample pack that allows you to experiment with the different surfaces and thicknesses. Since your printer may not be able to accept a certain thickness of paper, or may print sharper on one surface versus another, sample packs are helpful.

Brightness

Brightness describes reflected light, with the number highest to 100 providing the brightest white highlights and greater contrast. Less bright papers may be called warm-tone, which produce creamier highlights and less contast. Some very bright papers achieve their look with a chemical called OBA, or Optical Brightening Agent. Whether or not OBA will slowly degrade the quality of your photo rag print is a debated topic, with some photographers opting to not use OBA-treated papers.

Ink

Most photographers making photo rag prints use high-quality inkjet printers. The best-quality of these printers will use pigment ink as opposed to dye ink. Though a pigment ink printer is more expensive, it is worth the investment if you are making the choice to print on photo rag paper. Certain printers have different inks for printing on different paper surfaces as well, such as a glossy black cartridge versus a matte black cartridge.

Printer Profiles

Printer profiles allow the computer to translate the colors seen on the monitor into the color produced by the printer. It is important to have the correct profile when working with a specific ink and paper combination. When starting to make photo rag prints, it is easiest to use the same manufacturer of paper as your printer because of the matching profile. Printer profiles may be downloaded for free, purchased, or custom-created using profiling software and a spectrometer.

Test Strips

Test strips are recommended before making a full-sized print. In your imaging software, select an area of your print that contains a full range of shadows, highlights, and mid-tones, or contains the most important colors in the image. If there is an undesirable result in the printed test strip, the printer profile may need to be adjusted. As a quick-fix, some photographers will resort instead to creating an adjustment layer in the imaging software that can be added to the image to change color saturation or contrast.

How to Recover Pictures Edited With Paint

How to Recover Pictures Edited With Paint

Pictures, both photographs and paintings, have often been changed with paint, particularly in the era before digital manipulation made the retouching of photographs far easier. Although editing has the potential to improve a picture, for photographs, it usually contrasts badly with the flat, glossy surface of the print. Many photos that have been edited are in need of special recovery techniques to restore them to their original condition. This can be done both digitally and with the use of special chemicals.

Instructions

Digitally

    1

Scan the photo into a computer. Using a digital scanner, capture a high-quality image of the print and save it to a computer. For best results, attempt to capture the image at the highest resolution possible. Save the file as a .jpg or other high-quality image format.

    2

Load the file into a photo editing program. There are a number of image manipulation programs that can be used to change the look of a photo. One of the most popular is Photoshop, made by Adobe, but another, similar program will suffice.

    3

Edit the photo. This is the tricky part. Using the program's tools, attempt to remove the painted sections from the photo and "re-draw" the missing content. This can involve a bit of guesswork, as the sections that have been painted over have been obscured. In Photoshop, use the "blur," "sharpen," "smudge" and "clone stamp" tools. If you have another copy of the photo or a negative, use that as a guide.

    4

Print out the corrected edition. Once you've re-edited the photo, save it and print out a new copy. This will require a high-quality printer, as well as the paper on which you want the photo to be printed. Or consider preserving the touched-up photo in a digital format.

Chemically

    5

Try out various paint removers. "Do you want to understand digital photography methods that bring professional photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques could help you out in doing so. To find impressive pictures we initially need to look at some basic photography methods. The primary one I am able to share with you is determine about light. You can obtain every little thing concerning photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Each time you uncover about light and in what way it interacts with the direct environment then your images will get better..". Before applying a paint remover to the photo, you want to make sure it won't damage the photo itself. To do this, test out one or more types of liquid paint removers by daubing a wet Q-Tip on a tiny corner of the photo or on a photograph printed on similar material. Observe the effect.

    6

Gently brush the paint remover to the damaged section. Once you've found a proper paint remover, use it to gently brush away the paint on the photo. With luck, the original photograph should be preserved underneath.

    7

Load the photo into a scanner to correct for errors. These two approaches can, of course, be used in combination with each other.

How to Photograph People

How to Photograph People

They say the most difficult photographic client is the "Mother of the Bride." I have photographed a number of weddings and can completely agree with the adage; however, my experience is that we are all very vain when the camera is pointed at us. Everyone wants to look good, and as photographers it is our job to try to help achieve that goal. Many people are camera shy, but more importantly, all of us seem to have our signature smile or pose that we use when the camera is turned on us. This makes our pictures sometimes seem boring or fake. A good photographer knows how to get honest expressions from people. No matter how savvy we are technically, it is our ability to deal with people that will make or break a photograph. It is also fine to take candid photographs of people, and in those situations you can rarely control lighting or anything else. There will be times, though, when you will be asked by people to take their pictures or photograph an event. This article will provide some tips to help you through the assignment.

Instructions

    1
    Non-Standard Portrait

In the beginning of photography, most pictures of people were portraits taken to emulate paintings. Subjects were put into a neck brace to keep them from moving in order to get a non-blurry image. A portrait was always the same head and shoulders with a full face towards the camera. Thanks to photographers like Yousuf Karsh, portrait photography changed, and now there is no right or wrong way to take a picture of a person. This is a standard portrait taken in an atypical way. Most standard portraits are taken with a 75mm lens and include the head and shoulders. This was taken with a 50mm lens and up close to feature the eyes of the model and the symmetry of her face. There were three lights (main, key and highlight) using photographic umbrellas.

    Tell a Story

It is always best if a picture tells a story. It should tell the story of a person like the photograph of Miles Davis with his trumpet or Picasso staring at his artwork, not at the camera. This is a photograph I took while on assignment for "Pittsburgh Magazine." I always thought that if I cropped the picture below the barber's hands and just had the hand and the boy's face, you would have thought he was being tortured. Try to make your picture tell a story. If your subject is a "barbecue king," take the picture with the grill, or if she is a "volleyball queen," take the picture at the net. Having a prop will sometimes help the subject relax and get into the right frame of mind.

    Capture the Mood

A good picture captures the person's mood and persona. This is a photograph I took of one of my students while on a photography field trip. It was a great, relaxing day and the calmness of the day and his mood are captured in addition to his desire to be cool. The outdoor setting and waterfall to the right punctuate the image.

    Give Direction

I worked with a talent agency and did portfolios for models for a while, and found male models to be less in touch with their facial expressions. Female models seemed to have a broader range of facial expressions. This model just kept giving me a business smile, yet I wanted his portfolio to have more depth. On this shot I told him to "look like a gangster"-and this is what I got-which was a lot different than most of the rest. The trick is to find out what role people want to play and then direct them to show it to you.

    Help People Relax

Getting people to relax in front of the camera is the hard part. Kids are easy. They are used to being in front of the camera from an early age and haven't had time to become so tense. You can't fool an adult with a spinning bow tie, but it will work great on a 2-year-old. All of us develop a standard way we pose for the camera. We have a standard smile and stance. This can make us look phony because it is so practiced, it doesn't always seem natural. This model could not get out of flashing her smile. She has a beautiful smile and it has worked for her since she was 2 years old; however, talent agents want to see different expressions and stances from models. In order to extract different expressions, I would trick her by using a long cable release and constantly talking to her. The cable release lets me wander around the studio so the person never knows when the flash is coming. Using this technique I was able to get different "looks" from the model and help her build a better portfolio.
