What is Digital Editing?

What is Digital Editing?

Digital images has led millions of people to take pictures and videos that they can then upload to their personal computers. That opens up many options for digital photo and video editing. This article outlines the basic operations involved in digital editing.

Cropping and Sizing Photos

Even the most basic photo editing programs, such as those that come preloaded on many computers or as free programs included with cameras or printers, include options for cropping and sizing. Cropping involves selecting a portion of the image to be kept and discarding the rest of the original image. Cropping is useful for selecting the subject from a larger field, such as choosing a person from out of a crowd. But it also allows users to alter the framing of their images by removing the space surrounding their subject.
Most photo editing programs also allow users to alter an image's size. In some cases, sizing an image is done in conventional units (inches or centimeters). That can be useful when preparing an image for printing, especially if the final image is to be framed or placed in a photo album. Image sizing is also useful in determining optimal image quality and file size. Shrinking high resolution photos allows them to be sent via e-mail or to be posted to Web sites for online viewing.

Image Properties and Modifications

Altering an image's contrast (the difference between the darkest and lightest areas of the image), along with its brightness, can help to provide a clearer, more detailed image. This is sometimes useful to correct problems caused by automatic settings on the camera.
Color can also be adjusted via digital editing, either to achieve accurate color reproduction or to produce stylized images that are tinted a specific color.
Most photo editing programs contain some tools that allow for images to be modified. Clone tools may be useful if somebody wants to create an identical portion of the image somewhere else on the canvas (such as giving a friend two heads). Clone tools are useful for correcting scans of old photographs by fixing scratches and dust spots.
Some of the more advanced programs will also include special filters for sharpening of an image that is slightly out of focus or correcting "red eye" caused by direct flash. Although it is always beneficial to start with the best possible image, these tools are useful at preserving images with minor imperfections.

Video editing

Digital editing also refers to editing video clips. Simple video-editing software comes installed on most new computers (iMovie on Macs, MovieMaker on Window). "Are you looking to learn digital photography methods that deliver professional photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques could guide you out in doing so. To get stunning pictures we primary want to look at some fundamental photography techniques. The most important one I am able to share with you is discover about light. You can locate all the things about photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Each time you discover about light and in what approach it interacts with the direct environment then your images will get better..". Such programs allow users to put together clips from different videos, cut clips to shorten them, add transitions and titles between clips, even add music or voice overs.
Once the editing is complete, users can export their videos to different formats, from large, high-quality DVD videos to small, low-quality movies suitable for posting to YouTube or sending via e-mail.

Filters

Many photo and video editing programs are loaded with filters that can be applied to enhance or alter an image's look. Those filters can either be preset or variable according to the user's preference. Some filters attempt to reproduce the look of a certain type of photograph, such as one shot on black and white film, one processed to have a sepia tone, or one shot on high grain film.
Other filters are designed to give an image a stylized look, sometimes even making it appear to have been produced with colored pencils, paint, markers, or charcoal.
These filters give photographers and videographers a great deal of freedom in producing entirely original images that may, in the end, bear little resemblance to the original.

File Formats

Most photo-editing applications allow users to export photo files to common file types, such as JPEGs, TIFFs, or PDFs.
Video-editing applications may have fewer options for export. Apple's iMovie allows for export to Quicktime (.mov), for example, while MovieMaker allows for export to WindowsMediaVideo (.wmv).

Coffee Shop Photo Ideas

Coffee Shop Photo Ideas

Coffee shops are full of ambiance and character, and are rich with subjects for photography. Find a location with lots of windows to provide adequate available light. Plan your shoot for a slightly overcast day so that there is less glare from the sun shining through the windows. Be respectful of the other customers by not being intrusive with your camera, and consider asking permission from a coffee shop employee before proceeding.

Use Shallow Depth of Field

This image shows just the hands and mug in focus.
This image shows just the hands and mug in focus.

Shallow depth of field refers to a narrow range of focus. Experiment with images, such as precisely focused latte foam with gently blurred surroundings, or catch steam rising from a cup in front of a blurred background. If the depth of field is shallow enough and the lighting and composition are done correctly, the image can be very compelling.

Employ Juxtaposition

The coffee cup is in juxtaposition to the water.
The coffee cup is in juxtaposition to the water.

Juxtaposition refers to positioning two different elements together in a photograph for the purpose of comparison or contrast. Examples include an old building next to a new one, or a dish of ice cream next to a can marked "diet" soda. In a coffee shop you could pair things such as a full cup next to an empty one, or an empty table in the foreground with one that is occupied in the background. "Are you looking to learn digital photography techniques that carry expert photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques would likely assist you out in doing so. To acquire spectacular images we primary want to look at some fundamental photography strategies. The most important one I am able to share with you is discover about light. You can discover every little thing about photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Whenever you learn about light and in what approach it interacts with the direct environment then your photos will get improved..". Subjects do not have to be exact opposites to create juxtaposition, but they should compete for attention and in doing so, draw attention to each other.

People

People make wonderful candid photograph subjects.
People make wonderful candid photograph subjects.

People are excellent photographic subjects that fit in well in coffee shop photos. Try and make your shots candid and relaxed. Arrive with a friend or two and photograph them as they enjoy their beverages. Never photograph other customers without asking permission first. Photographs that contain recognizable images of people may require model releases. Editorial photos generally do not need a release, but images for sale do. If your photo is for anything other than your own use, obtaining a release is prudent.

Tell a Story

A properly composed image can tell a story.
A properly composed image can tell a story.

The 1,000 words that a picture is said to be worth can describe so much more than the colors and subjects or composition and layout. Tell a story with your photograph. Catch a barista in conversation with a customer as money exchanges hands, or capture an abandoned table littered with pastry crumbs, an empty mug and a crumpled napkin.

Macro

Coffee bean macro photos are a coffee shop classic.
Coffee bean macro photos are a coffee shop classic.

Macro refers to extreme close-up. If you have a good macro lens, coffee shops are full of interesting macro possibilities. Look for subjects such as coffee beans, mug detail or espresso foam.

Still Life

A table setting is an example of a still life.
A table setting is an example of a still life.

Think of a still life as objects posing for a photograph. Bring some small items with you to arrange on your table next to your coffee, such as an agenda and pen, or a stack of bills and a calculator.

What is a Camera Prism?

Originally, when photographers set up their early camera equipment, they put dark clothes over their heads to keep the light out while the focused the image on a ground glass plate. The problem was, the image was upside down and reversed from left to right. The solution to this came in the camera prism.

History

Ansel Adams used a view camera. That is, he used a camera that consisted of a lens, bellows, focusing screen, film plates and a tripod. It was bulky and heavy, yet he carted it up and down the mountains of Yosemite National Park and the Sierras. All the time, he had to view an image that was upside down and reversed. This got a little better for other photographers with the introduction of the twin-lens reflex and single-lens reflex cameras, but Adams kept to his old standard.

Types

The twin-lens reflex camera has both a viewing lens and a taking lens, the former above the latter. The taking lens goes straight back to the film plane and, when the shutter is released, exposes a direct image, still upside down and reversed right to left. The viewing lens, however, which sends the image to a mirror then to a ground glass screen corrects the image top to bottom, but not right to left.

Significance

The single-lens reflex camera, primarily the 35mm-type, finally fixed the image by using a pentaprism. This is a five-sided prism that straights the image. This means that looking through the viewfinder shows the image exactly as it appears in real life. This makes viewing and composing a photographic scene easier and more efficient.

Effects

A single-lens reflex camera uses the same lens to view the scene as it does to take the photo. This is accomplished by use of a mirror behind the lens which flips up at the time of exposure. "Do you need to learn digital photography systems that deliver expert photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques might guide you out in doing so. To find spectacular photos we initially need to have to look at some basic photography methods. The preliminary one I am able to share with you is determine about light. You can obtain all the things about photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Whenever you learn about light and in what method it interacts with the direct environment then your images will get improved..". This mirror is at a 45-degree angle and sends the image from the lens up to the pentaprism where it is bounced to the top, then the front, then back to the eyepiece.

Considerations

The camera prism came in to wide use for SLRs by the 1960s and still is in general use today. Bigger similar prism began to be used on medium-format cameras such as the Hasselblad, Bronica, Mamiya and Pentax 645. It never became standard on the Hasselblad until the introduction of the digital model, the H1, but always was built-in to the Pentax 645.

How to Arrange People for Portraits

How to Arrange People for Portraits

Whether you are planning your family's portrait or you are a photographer yourself, arranging people for portrait photos is a creative challenge that requires attention to detail and to those included in the photo. Arranging people in portraits is possible with a few simple tricks that are available regardless of your skills in photography.

Instructions

    1

Write a list of all of the people who will be in the portrait. This will allow you to organize and arrange each person based on height, age or any other way you would like to have everyone together in the photo.

    2

Plan to have chairs or other seats (such as benches or stools) for those who prefer to sit in portraits -- or for children who are short (if you are having all of the adults stand).

    3

Place adults in the back row when working with families. Enclose the family with a grandparent on either end and the children and grandchildren in the front.

    4

Arrange by age, increasing from the left or right side. You can also arrange everyone by height, going from shortest to tallest (or vice versa).

    5

Have those in the photo stand based on the color of their clothing, keeping analogous colors closer together (such as green, teal and light blue) while separating complementary colors such as red and green (unless you would like someone to stand out above the rest in the portrait).
