How to Add Plug-Ins to GIMP

How to Add Plug-Ins to GIMP

Besides being free, one of the true advantages of GIMP is the ability to download and add plug-ins to modify your software. Like Firefox, GIMP is open source software, and therefore, users can create their own scripts or plug-ins and share those with other users. "Are you looking to understand digital photography solutions that bring expert photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques would help you out in doing so. To find impressive images we first need to have to look at some imperative photography strategies. The initial one I am able to share with you is uncover about light. You can discover everything concerning photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Anytime you discover about light and in what approach it interacts with the direct environment then your shots will get better..". There is no charge to download plug-ins, although you do have to register if you want to upload a script or plug-in that you developed. Not all plug-ins are worth downloading, but there are thousands, and some will add outstanding functionality to your photo editing software. Read on to find out how to add plug-ins to your Mac.

Instructions

    1

Download a plug-in that you like. You will find thousands at the GIMP Plug-In Registry page linked in Resources below. The tags will give you some idea of what the plug-in does. Plug-ins are designated by the .SCM file extension. Click on the plug-in link to find out more about the plug-in.

    2
    Script Detail

The detail page will tell you all about what the plug-in does, where it is located and how it is used. It also details the scripting engine used. GIMP uses two types of scripting engines: script-fu and python-fu. Most plug-ins are written in script-fu. Pay attention to the instructions. This plug-in will be found under the COLORS tab. Some will be found under the FILTERS tab or in other locations. Save the ATTACHMENT to download the plug-in.

    3

The xxx .SCM file needs to be placed in the SCRIPTS folders. This can be found at //user/application support/gimp. All scripts are stored in this folder. If they are not placed in this folder the application will not be able to find them. Where they appear in the program is determined by the plug-in. Some will be under filters, colors or in other locations.

    4
    Script-Fu

Once you download a script-fu plug-in, you would think they would all be located under the new SCRIPT-FU tab you now see on your toolbar. This is not necessarily the case. If they are a special effect or tool they will appear under this tab.

    5
    Sample Plug-In

The script-fu Technicolor plug-in, which is displayed here, is a useful tool for CMY/RGB color control. This plug-in will be found under COLORS, not under the script-fu tab. This is clearly explained on the plug-in detail under Step 2, so make sure you read the details on each plug-in. GIMP has a lot of great plug-ins built into the core product; however, you can really expand your software and its capabilities by learning about and using plug-ins. Like Firefox, it makes a great application better through customization.

DIY Photography Studio Lighting Equipment

You can replicate the effects of major studio lighting in your own home by mimicking concepts, rather than actual equipment. Photography is the art of manipulating and using light to your advantage; even the dullest of subjects can come alive in a photo if properly lighted. Screens, backdrops and any method imaginable to bounce and diffuse light will produce studio lighting effects, you only need creativity and a solid grasp on lighting concepts and how your camera works in a given lighting situation.

Backdrop

You need a backdrop to not only concentrate the attention to the subject, but to gather and reflect light as well. "Would you like to understand digital photography techniques that bring experienced photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques could help you out in doing so. To get amazing pictures we initially want to look at some imperative photography methods. The preliminary one I am able to share with you is determine about light. You can come across every little thing about photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Whenever you uncover about light and in what technique it interacts with the direct environment then your shots will get more beneficial..". Backdrops act as a reflecting screen, light directed at the screen at an angle lower than the object will negate shadows that may form. The goal of proper studio lighting is to create a natural light effect; that is, soft lighting that does not render harsh tones against the object causing unnatural whiteout. Shadows are among the top giveaways of amateur photography, so the goal of studio photography is to reduce if not eliminate unwanted shadows. Back lighting, with the use of a backdrop, must be used if forward or side lighting are also used.

Screens

As with backdrops, screens are used to bounce the light from a bulb onto the object, thus diffusing it to illuminate the object naturally and without harsh beams. Most screens are made of some kind of fabric, whether canvas or a synthetic, use a large piece of white cardboard to mimic the bounce of the screen. Screens can either be held up by an assistant or positioned upright by a stand. Many professional studio photographers use umbrella lights, which are outward cone-shaped light shades that help spread the light to avoid harsh concentration. Without these, screens will act to diffuse the light instead.

Key Light

Background lights should be pointed at the backdrop screen behind the object, but the key light is what provides that main light for the shot. The key light can be any normal light that you have; though, for best results, purchase a cool white bulb rather than a yellow-tinged incandescent. For harsh lighting effects, position the key light directly at the object. For softer glows, bounce the key light off of one of the screens.

Light Boxes

Studio photography does not necessarily mean a big, model-size setup, studio photography refers to any shot that is positioned and set with manipulated light. For small items to be shot in a studio, the use of a light box is recommended. Light boxes, also known as white boxes, are five-sided boxes made out of white card board, foam board or stretched white fabric that diffuse direct light when it passes through. Light boxes perform all the functions of major studio lighting on a small scale; all you need is a white box and two or three lights aimed above and in front of the box. The object is then placed inside and photographed through the one open side.

Photo Shoot Ideas for Men

Photo Shoot Ideas for Men

Coming up with photo shoot ideas for men may seem difficult at first, but once you start thinking about everyday activities the process becomes much easier. The most enjoyable photo shoots for men involve outdoor activities, but even relaxing at home or busily working at a computer in the office are ways to get great photographs. The key is to have men performing activities of some kind instead of posing for photos.

Sports and Action

Sports- and action-related photo shoots open up a wide variety of ideas for getting great photographs of men.

Put the man in a running suit and place him on a track for example, and get shots of him on the starting blocks or racing around the track.

Shoot a man playing basketball indoors or out, or create a photo shoot of him playing baseball, raquetball or tennis.

Less action-oriented photo shoots could be created with a simple set of barbells or a workout bench. This is a particularly good photo shoot idea for men who are in great physical shape.

Family Shots

Family men and men who may not be overly active outdoors may be more comfortable with a more relaxed photo shoot. One photo shoot idea for men with children is to simply have him play on the floor with young kids, or read a book while holding a baby. If the man has teenagers, try setting up a photo shoot of him and the teen doing a woodworking project or working on a car.

Environmental

Environmental portraits are portraits that are taken of people in their natural or everyday environment. This can be a wonderful photo shoot for men, particularly if the man spends a lot of his life outdoors.

A rancher for example, is an excellent candidate for an environmental portrait photo shoot. He can dress in his "work clothes" complete with hat and boots, and the photo shoot could have him posed on a horse overlooking his ranch, or leaning against a corral fence with horses behind him.

A doctor could have an environmental photo shoot in a clinic or hospital, and a dentist could be photographed near his instruments or dental chair.

Rugged Outdoors

Rugged outdoor photo shoots are an excellent standby idea for photographing men. "Do you need to understand digital photography solutions that carry expert photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques could help you out in doing so. To acquire spectacular pictures we first need to look at some basic photography techniques. The initial one I am able to share with you is figure out about light. You can come across all the things concerning photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Anytime you learn about light and in what method it interacts with the direct environment then your shots will get better..". Outfit the man with hiking boots, a backpack and a canteen, then shoot him in a rugged-looking hiking location.

Set up a camping tent near some trees and sit him in a camp chair with a propane stove or firepit nearby.

Have the man dress in workmen or handyman clothing, add a tool belt and have him work on a home improvement project such as building a deck.

Give the man an axe, a chopping block and some wood then take photos of him splitting wood for a fireplace.

How to Make a Still-Life Shooting Set

How to Make a Still-Life Shooting Set

Still-life photographers capture the essence of stationary items, showing them to their best advantage. Many still-life shots are of items that clients want photographed for in advertising. These types of items require you to travel to the photography location as clients want you to shoot on location. As a result, bringing the correct equipment is crucial. Unless the items are very large, you need a portable still-life shooting set for these assignments.

Instructions

    1

Invest in a sturdy but lightweight folding table. Aluminum tables are easy to carry. Additionally, photography stores sell tables with collapsible legs that form a case when folded in half. While these are also easy to carry, cheaper tables work just as well.

    2

Construct a backboard or frame that clamps onto your table to hold various backdrops. For a solid backboard, use foam core board. Alternately, use any type of back support with clamps attached, allowing you to change backgrounds for shooting.

    3

Stock up on backdrops. Black velvet is indispensable for still-life photography, along with white vinyl and a clear piece of glass to place over the black velvet when shooting jewelry and other items needing a reflective surface. Add additional colors to vary your shooting kit.

    4

Use softboxes to fill in shadows created by the still-life objects. Maneuverability is critical. Purchase small softboxes and mount them on adjustable tripods. For some still-life shots, you want strategically-placed shadows to mimic reality; in others, you need to erase all shadows.

    5

Try a backless wooden frame instead of the foam core when you need to illuminate the object from the back. Hang translucent fabric on the frame and position a softbox behind it. Beverages emit a flattering inner glow when following this technique. "Do you want to learn digital photography systems that carry skilled photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques would guide you out in doing so. To find spectacular photographs we primary need to look at some imperative photography strategies. The initial one I am able to share with you is identify about light. You can come across every little thing concerning photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Whenever you uncover about light and in what technique it interacts with the direct environment then your shots will get improved..". It is also good for transparent glass objects.

    6

Place the piece of glass on top of black or white fabric and set an object on top to achieve a reflective effect. A mirror is not as effective since it catches the reflection of other items in the room, distracting from the still life.

    7

Bring a tripod for your camera and a remote shutter release. Adjust your light meter and focus before taking the shot. By using a remote, you can stay at the table, rearranging the still life and changing the lights without returning to the camera for every shot.
