How to Organize Images With iPhoto

How to Organize Images With iPhoto

How to Organize Images With iPhoto. iPhoto is an image editing and management application that is part of the iLife suite of products included with the Apple OS-X operating system. iPhoto is all about simplicity and ease of use for the novice image editor. The image import and editing capabilities will not satisfy the serious amateur or professional photographer, but will suffice for the novice or beginner photographer. In this article we will explore how to use iPhoto to organize your digital images. "Would you like to understand digital photography systems that carry skilled photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques would likely help you out in doing so. To acquire impressive pictures we initially need to have to look at some fundamental photography techniques. The preliminary one I am able to share with you is uncover about light. You can locate every little thing regarding photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Each time you find out about light and in what approach it interacts with the direct environment then your pictures will get much better..".

Instructions

    1

There are two ways to organize images in iPhoto, and at first it may be confusing because you may not understand the difference between an "EVENT" and an "ALBUM." An event is something that "happens" and an album is something you create. For example, you may now want to upload all the pictures you took over the Christmas holiday season. When you connect your camera and begin importing images, iPhoto will automatically upload to LAST IMPORT unless you specify a new event. Just create a new event from the drop down menu.

    2

Once you have a new event, import your images into the new event and type in an appropriate title. Events include all the images from the upload. The blurry ones, dark ones, out-of-focus ones, everything you have imported are included in the event. The event becomes your image archive of all the images you took from that time and place. Events are not for sharing; they are for archiving images in an organizational structure you define and can remember.

    3

Albums are for sharing. I may want to post an album to a website, send it to an individual or upload it to a photo site to create a calendar or book. I will probably only want to put the best images form the event into the album. To create a new album, simply select NEW ALBUM from the drop down menu and type in a name. The empty album will appear in the frame at the left.

    4

After you have created your new album you can add photos by simply selecting them and dragging them to the new album. Your images will still remain as part of the event they were imported from and be visible in ALL PHOTOS as well. By dragging them to the Album you are not duplicating the images, but simply adding them to the album view.

    5

Once you have a new album you can label and rate the images. I recommend you only do this for albums, since it takes a lot of time and you don't need to label and rate all the duplicate shots that are not of the best quality. You can then sort your images by rating and using keywords to easily find them at a later time. iPhoto is an easy way to organize and manage your images, even if you use another program for image editing.

What Is Dot Gain in Photography?

Dot gain can make photos look darker, muddier and not exactly the way you intend them to look when printed. It is not a function of the original photo---digital or film---or of the image-processing software you use, or even the screen on which you work. It is the result of the combination of the printer and the paper used.

The Phenomenon

Dot gain, essentially, is a phenomenon caused when ink from a printer hits the surface of the paper and sinks in. What happens is that the ink seeps into the paper and expands slightly. This causes the tiny dots that make up the finished photo print to get bigger and darker.

Types

This bleeding of ink is especially noticeable in screened images, those associated mostly with high-volume printing, such as in newspapers or magazines. In order to reproduce photos in a press run, each photo must be reduced to a series of dots of varying sizes for each color printed, cyan, magenta, yellow and black. This is called screening or half-toning. If you look at an image in a newspaper with a magnifying glass, you will see the dots.

Quality Counts

Dot gain varies depending upon the type paper used for printing. For example, newsprint, the paper newspapers are printed upon, is low-grade paper that "bleeds" ink across its surface. This is why newspaper images, especially black and white photos, can appear very dark even if that is not how they were toned in the newsroom. Better paper, especially coated or glossy paper, such as in magazines, does not allow the ink to spread much.

Solution

One fix for the dot gain problem is to tone photos lighter than you normally would. If you are printing to card stock or regular non-photo paper, bring the mid-tones up a notch or two and lighten the lights a bit. "Do you need to discover digital photography solutions that bring professional photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques could assist you out in doing so. To become spectacular pictures we initially want to look at some basic photography methods. The primary one I am able to share with you is determine about light. You can obtain every little thing regarding photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Anytime you discover about light and in what approach it interacts with the direct environment then your shots will get superior..". The photo may look a little washed out on the screen, but when printed to un-coated paper, it will darken. This takes a little experimentation to get the right balance.

Benefits

Some photos could benefit from dot gain. A washed-out photo that can't be toned darker without losing detail, for example, will gain both a darker tone and some depth wherever there are textures. While it is best to tone photos before printing, dot gain can help to fill them out a little.

How to Get Non-Standard-Size Photo Prints

How to Get Non-Standard-Size Photo Prints

If you enjoy making your own art pieces for your home, you may occasionally feel limited by the standard sizes offered for photo prints. With all the options digital photography and photo editing present, you may want to make a photo creation in an unusual size. Fortunately, editing software makes this fairly easy to do. Even if you don't have the capability to print the images yourself, you can use editing software to prepare a photo for printing at a local store and trim it to an odd size afterward.

Instructions

    1

Determine whether or not your photo is actually an unusual size. Some typical photo sizes are wallet, 3.5 by 5, 4 by 6, 5 by 7, 8 by 10, 10 by 13, 11 by 14, 16 by 20, 20 by 24 and 20 by 30. If your photo fits into one of these size categories, you should be able to find a place that will print it.

    2

Open your photo editing software and set the canvas to the standard size that is closest to what you will be printing without cutting off any of the photo. "Are you looking to understand digital photography solutions that carry expert photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques could support you out in doing so. To find amazing photos we first need to look at some fundamental photography methods. The most important one I am able to share with you is identify about light. You can locate all the things about photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Anytime you learn about light and in what way it interacts with the direct environment then your shots will get superior..". For example, if you want to print an 8 by 14 photo, you would set your canvas to the 11 by 14 size.

    3

Use the paint bucket or color fill-in tool on your software and fill in the blank space around the photo with a solid color. It doesn't matter what color you choose since you will just be cutting this space off later.

    4

Have prints of the photo made at your favorite photo development shop, or make them yourself if you have access to a printer that is capable of printing the size you desire.

    5

Trim off the excess blank space by hand with scissors or by using a paper cutter or trimmer.

How to Photograph a Montral Vacation

How to Photograph a Montral Vacation

Quebec Province in Canada is a wonderful travel adventure and for those of us in the eastern United States it is very accessible by car. Montral is just an 8-hour drive from New York City. Quebec City is just a 3-hour drive from Montral and truly the most "French" city in North America. Montral is the largest city in Quebec and although it has a very European feel, it is really a true cosmopolitan blend of French and English cultures. Montral is a photographer's delight situated at the foot of a small mountain; each street offers a different elevated view of the city. The city is a blend of very old and very new architecture with beautiful parks, monuments and people to photograph. This article offers a few tips on how to get great pictures of your visit and some resources on how to plan your trip.

Instructions

    1
    Notre Dame Plaza

Take some scenic shots of the old monuments and buildings. One of the first things you should do in Montral is go to the Old Town and visit the Old Port area. There are many old buildings to photograph and great cafes and restaurants to break your journey. The old town is basically a flat area and going there first will be a good way to work up to tacking the hills of Montral. On your way down to the docks make sure you visit Notre Dame Cathedral and the Champs de Mars area. These areas were named and modeled after those in Paris, and although there is no Eiffel Tower, you can get some great scenic views from the top of the Clock Tower. It is a long walk up to the top, but more good training for the hills. It will take more than one visit to the Old Town to photograph it, so going there first will enable you to plan your time better.

    2
    Place Victoria

When you tire of the Old Town start walking the hills to see the rest of the city. Saint Catherine's Street is the main business area and loaded with shopping, clubs and restaurants. Many of the new buildings are beautiful examples of modern architecture and great people-watching places like Place Victoria. The Metro in Montral is also similar to that of Paris and very easy to use. You can save some hill walking by walking through parts of the underground and using the escalators. "Do you need to discover digital photography solutions that carry skilled photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques might help you out in doing so. To get spectacular photographs we primary need to look at some essential photography strategies. The primary one I am able to share with you is discover about light. You can find every little thing about photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Each time you find out about light and in what method it interacts with the direct environment then your images will get superior..". Knowing how the underground is connected can be very important in the cold weather months and for using the Metro.

    3
    Montral Botanical Garden

Visit the vast system of parks in Montral. There are a lot of beautiful parks and gardens throughout the city. The most sensational garden is the Montral Botanical Garden. This is one of the world's largest and most spectacular botanical gardens complete with Japanese and Chinese gardens and a large Insectarium. Besides, where else can you see a four-poster grass bed?

    4
    See It By Horse

A great way to see the sites is to spring for a horse carriage ride. They can be found at Notre Dame and throughout the Old Town. The drivers know the entire history of the city and will be glad to slow down or stop so you can take pictures.

    5
    Montral Jazz Festival

One of the best times to visit Montral is during the International Jazz Festival. This world-renowned event features the world's top jazz performers playing on multiple free stages day and night throughout the city. The largest acts play inside clubs and auditoriums, but will also play short sets outside at the open stages. If jazz is not your thing, the Montral Comedy Festival and Montral Film Festival are other summer events that offer great people-watching and photographic opportunities. The city is one of the most lively cities I have ever visited at any time, but very special during these signature festivals.
