How to Take Photos of Moving Cars

How to Take Photos of Moving Cars

Taking action shots of cars may be one of the trickiest disciplines to master. But it can also be one of the most rewarding. And, with a few tips and tricks, not to mention a lot of memory space, you could begin churning out some of the most exciting images in photography.

Instructions

Panning from a Stationary Vantage Point

    1

Prepare your telephoto lens. A 70 to 200mm one works perfectly, but a lot depends on how much distance you have from the passing car. Still, even if you're able to get up close, it is best to work with anything over 70mm (working with a 1.6 crop factor) to get a more compressed shot.

    2

Set your camera to shutter priority. Start at around 1/100th. Work with the ISO to achieve a narrow aperture. F/8 and above should do the trick.

    3

Have the car drive past you several times so you can build up a rhythm. Don't be frustrated by your first few shots, and avoid deleting the images until you get home. Every image is worth something, even if it is to teach you what you are doing wrong. "Would you like to understand digital photography approaches that bring professional photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques would guide you out in doing so. To find spectacular pictures we first want to look at some basic photography methods. The primary one I am able to share with you is figure out about light. You can discover all the things about photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Whenever you find out about light and in what approach it interacts with the direct environment then your pictures will get more beneficial..". To improve, you will need to understand why your images are coming out the way they do.

    4

Signal the driver to increase his speed or focus on cars running at up to 50 mph. Drop your shutter speed down to 1/80th to get a decent contrast of motion blur in the background and the wheels, maintaining crispness along the edges of the car.

    5

Try to keep the subject fairly close and use a wide angle, like 18mm and above on a digital SLR. Film and full frames can use a 28mm and above. Try not to go wider than this because it will distort the lines of the car, and unless you really know what you're doing, this can be terribly unflattering.

    6

Keep in mind that while panning, especially during cornering, if you're trying to take the three quarter view, the front and rear of the car are actually traveling at different speeds in perspective to your camera lens. This is why you see a lot of shots where the front is crisp but then begins to trail off at the rear, try to keep the car as "flat" as possible; a side view works best with this shot.

What Is a Shutterbug?

The word Shutterbug may make you want to look for insects, but that is not the case at all. The shutter in shutterbug refers to photography and the use of a camera's shutter. Not only does the term "shutterbug" apply to photographers, but it is used in many other aspects of photography as the nickname has grown and spread throughout the industry.

Definition

A shutterbug is anyone obsessed with photography. You can find these enthusiasts taking pictures, printing pictures and constantly carrying their cameras. A shutterbug could do photography for a living or just have it as an obsessive hobby. There are no standards for the classification of a shutterbug, just a passion for photos is enough to consider yourself one.

Magazine

The nickname has launched a popular website and magazine at Shutterbug.com. Here photo fanatics can share tips, read stories and get the newest photography products. This website is dedicated to all kinds of Shutterbugs, including amateur and professionals. The website also features photo contests every month with cash- and photo-related prizes.

Expansion

The digital age of photography has dramatically expanded the shutterbug base. Digital cameras are so much easier to use than film cameras that many more people have fallen in love with photography. Storage of photos becomes instant and costs are now dramatically lower to become an active photographer.

Internet

You will find shutterbugs all over the Internet. They unite and share tips with each other throughout various shutterbug websites. The Shutterbug Photography Forum features multiple topics including cameras, photo links and a general discussion. Different locations meet together on-line and in the real world to form shutterbug clubs. The Austin, Texas Shutterbug Club welcomes all photography lovers and uses the Internet to share its membership's passion.

Misconceptions

Shutterbug refers strictly to the world of photography. "Would you like to learn digital photography systems that carry skilled photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques might guide you out in doing so. To get spectacular images we primary need to look at some essential photography strategies. The most important one I am able to share with you is find out about light. You can locate everything concerning photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Anytime you find out about light and in what method it interacts with the direct environment then your photos will get improved..". Other forms of photography including video taping, scrap booking and animation fall into different categories. Using a cell phone to take pictures for social networking websites is not technically considered a shutterbug, because those photos are not taken for the photography itself, but more for the purpose of sharing with friends.

The Purpose of a Chroma Green Screen in Photography

Green screens are often seen on movie sets or on news stations as anchors report the weather, but these screens are often used for photographers as well. The use of green screen serves many purposes for a photographer, and as long as proper lighting and a high quality camera is used, the green will work well. While initial pictures with the green screen may look unusual, the post production process shows how effective the screen really is.

Function

A green screen is used so that photographers can eliminate a background all together. Green screens are used along with blue screens, but blue screens may interfere with a person's eyes or clothes more than a green screen would. The green screen is always the object furthest in the background and serves as a temporary backdrop.

Post Production

When a green screen is used, it is most likely eliminated during post production. This seems like a waste of time and money, but the green screen actually makes the process a lot easier for photographers to eliminate and remove elements in a photo. For example, a photographer taking portraits can switch backgrounds to feature different colors and designs right over the green screen. This way, the photographer just needs to purchase one background screen instead of several.

Features

The use of green screen is typically reserved for professionals. The use is popular for photo shoots in magazines, newspapers and on the Internet. If a photographer wants to mix the cast of a television show together, he can take pictures of the complete cast separately and then mix them together easily by removing the green screen background.

Home Use

The use of green screens can be applied and used during home photography as well. Even if you do not want to purchase a green screen, you can use a solid colored sheet in order to achieve the same effect. Hang up a solid colored sheet and make it as flat as possible. Dress the figures in the photo in opposite colors of the sheet so they are not removed from the photo when the green screen is. Take the pictures and use an advanced photo program like Adobe Photoshop in order to eliminate the background of the photo and replace it with another.

Considerations

Green screen can only serve a helpful purpose if there is proper lighting. "Do you want to discover digital photography solutions that bring skilled photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques could support you out in doing so. To acquire stunning pictures we first want to look at some fundamental photography strategies. The initial one I am able to share with you is uncover about light. You can obtain everything concerning photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Each time you discover about light and in what method it interacts with the direct environment then your pictures will get more beneficial..". Improper lighting can cause undesired shadows and different shades on the green screen. This will make the green screen useless and the overall pictures will not be as a good as they could have been with proper lighting. A lighting kit should always be used instead of a flash that could reflect off of the green screen.

How to Take Action Photos With a 35mm Camera

How to Take Action Photos With a 35mm Camera

Action photos are an exciting and challenging aspect of the art of photography. Using a 35mm camera is a true test to your patience and skills and an abundance of these cameras are available for sale as people make the transition to digital photography. This tutorial will require a camera with interchangeable lenses, also called a single lens reflex, though any 35mm camera can take action shots. A SLR or camera with interchangeable lenses will give you most control over capturing your moving subject and provides more flexibility in stopping action in your photograph.

Instructions

    1

Select a shutter speed using the shutter priority setting on your camera. A majority of 35mm cameras will have shutter priority settings, sometimes labeled Tv. Shutter speed is how fast the curtain of your lens will move when the shutter button, used to take the photo, is pressed. For action photos, settings of 1/250 of a second are necessary to stop the action in the frame of your photo and create a clear picture. By using the shutter priority setting, the camera will automatically set the aperture number needed to create a properly exposed photo with a balance of highlights and shadows. The aperture number determines the depth of field, or what will be in focus in the background of the image, by allowing a certain amount of light to enter the camera through the lens.

    2

Choose a lens based on the subject you are capturing and the distance from your subject. For example, most sports photographers use a telephoto lens with an average focal distance of 70mm to 200mm. This lens allows the photographer to capture a close-up shot of the action from the sidelines where they are positioned during the game. A medium focal length of 50mm will work well for capturing children at the playground or a dog playing in the backyard.

    3

Track the moving subject with your camera while holding your right hand on the shutter button and your left hand underneath the lens. Your elbows should be held close to your body, at your sides, and your feet should be shoulder width apart with one foot slightly in front of the other. This stance will allow your body to serve as a "tripod" and keep your camera steady while tracking the subject with your camera.

    4

Compose the photo with the moving subject coming into open space in the frame. "Do you want to learn digital photography methods that deliver expert photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques might help you out in doing so. To find amazing photographs we first need to have to look at some basic photography techniques. The most important one I am able to share with you is uncover about light. You can come across every little thing concerning photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Each time you discover about light and in what approach it interacts with the direct environment then your pictures will get much better..". For example, if a dog is running from the right side of your viewfinder in the camera, press the shutter when he enters the viewfinder and leave the space empty to the left of the viewfinder where he is running towards. The outcome will show the dog in the right side of the image frame and give him the space to run towards, making the photo natural and leaving the viewer at ease.

    5

Swivel your upper body with the motion of the subject and press the shutter at the moment of peak action. An example of peak action would be the moment a soccer player's foot makes contact with the ball while shooting a goal. Stop your upper body movement at the precise moment you press the shutter.

    6

Raise the shutter speed to 1/500 or faster if you notice a blurring of the subject in the image. Bracket your shot by using various shutter speeds to test the proper one for stopping action in your image. Bracketing is the act of shooting the same photo with different settings to ensure the proper exposure or image is achieved.
