How to Build a Personal Darkroom

Photographic color printing can be a difficult and tedious process, so it may be best to find a reliable lab to develop your color photos. However, black and white photography is a different story, as it is easier to control and is relatively simple to process. For these reasons many photography enthusiasts have opted to build their own personal darkroom. If you are considering a darkroom in your home, there are a few important things to consider. Read on to learn how to build a personal darkroom.

Instructions

Choose the room where you will build your darkroom. A basic darkroom must have running water, work surfaces and be completely light tight. The room can be as small as 8 by 10 feet, meaning that a spare bathroom or a basement storage room can be easily converted into your darkroom.

Divide your darkroom into a dry side, where you will print, load reels and complete other non-chemical tasks, and a wet side where you will complete all of the chemical processing.

Provide your darkroom with ample storage space. It is best to separate the commonly wet items and the commonly dry items to prevent cross contamination. A small refrigerator is a great way to help prolong the life of your chemicals, film and paper.

About Medical Photographers

Medical photography is a less often mentioned career that proves to be a very important one within the medical community. We generally see the work of medical photographers in medical pamphlets, science textbooks and perhaps in images on medical television shows. Images may also be used in scientific reports and journals and as a means of study among those in various healthcare professions. This style of art shows the human body in its most vulnerable form, as photographers capture internal and external images of the body, injuries, diseases and medical procedures.

Medical photographers not only need to be excellent at their craft, they also need to have a great deal of knowledge and understanding in science and medicine. Whether working in a hospital, clinical or forensic setting, a successful medical photographer will be able to produce images sufficient for study as well as use in medical articles and publications.

Disciplines within medical illustration include clinical photography, medical art, graphic design and healthcare photos and videography. In addition to just taking pictures, medical photographers may also use technology, including photomicrography, computers and design software, in producing their images.

Medical photographers may take photos of patients to help diagnose, track and record treatments. Some may take pictures or video of operations, which can be used for later medical instruction. Photomicrography may be used to show microscopic images in greater detail.

Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) suggests that high school students interested in pursuing a career in medical photography should take classes in art, biology, chemistry, algebra, photography, drawing and design, English, history, graphic arts, printing, health occupations/medical professions education and computer illustration. Most often a bachelor's degree and extensive experience in photography is also required before pursuing medical photography as a career.

Individuals may become certified in medical photography through the BioCommunications Association, which describes its organization as an international professional association of people working in the biological communications field. In order to become certified, one must successfully complete a written exam, a practical exam and a demonstration of competency.

According to CBsalary.com, the U.S. National Average Salary for medical photography is $28,319, with a salary range of $23,400 to $39,339. How to Use a Dry Mounting Press

Depending on the brand and model of your press, the exact process varies, although dry mounting procedures have some principles in common. Basically, you place a heat-activated dry adhesive sheet between a photo and a mounting board, and press it in a machine that applies both heat and pressure to securely adhere the image to the board without any seams, wrinkles or wet spots. Mounting presses also work for mounting prints or drawings, and are frequently used as photo irons for photographs that have acquired wrinkles.

Instructions

Allow the press to heat while you apply a dry sheet of tissue to the back of the photograph. Before proceeding, carefully read the instruction manuals for the press and for the brand of tissue paper you are using. Temperatures and times vary per type of paper. Consult the time and temperature tables or you risk burning your photo. Set the temperature gauge to the proper heat setting (usually on a numeral dial) that you have determined from the manuals.

Adhere the tissue to the photograph by using a hot tacking iron. This special tool literally looks like a miniature iron head attached to a long handle. The purpose of the tacking iron is to attach, in one or two small spots, the photo to the tissue, before mounting on the board, to prevent slipping during the press. If you don't use the tacking iron, you are likely to get a skewed mount. Position the dry tissue directly behind the photo (or image) you are adhering to the mount. When the iron is hot, press it gently over a corner of the tissue paper on top of the photo's back. Repeat in another corner or leave as is.

Position the photo (with tissue now attached) onto your mounting board. Center it exactly as you want it, and while lifting up the corner of photo, use the iron to heat a spot or the entire edge of the tissue paper against the board. All three pieces should now be attached (though lightly) to each other.

Cut two pieces of craft paper (unless your press came with protective cushions or inserts) and open the press. Place one piece of paper in the center, and lay the photo on top. Place the second piece of paper over the photo, close the lid and begin the press. Refer to the timetable from your tissue instructions and press instructions to determine the length of time the photo should be pressed. Depending on the medium, the press time will be around 30 to 50 seconds. If when you remove it, it is not completely adhered, return it to the press for more time.
