DIY Water Light Ripple

You may have seen impressive photos of a drop of water hitting the surface and the ripples of water coming from it, each touched with just the right amount of light. While these set-ups take time, they are achievable even by amateur photographers. The trick is having the right camera, knowing how to use it and perfect timing. After some practice, you will have your own water light ripple picture that you can add to your portfolio.

Instructions

Screw the macro lens onto your camera.

Attach your camera to a tripod.

Place the metal pan on a counter or table and fill it with water.

Set up your camera and tripod in front of the pan.

Attach your external flashes to tripods and position one behind the pan and one to the right of it.

Prop up the cutting board behind the pan, in front of the external flash.

Set your camera's flash exposure compensation to one of its lowest settings to freeze the motion of the drop when the photo is taken. This process is different depending on what type of camera you use and how much natural light you have in the room. Refer to your camera's user manual for detailed instructions.

Adjust your camera to 100 ISO, f10.0 to f14.0 and exposure of 1/250 settings.

Focus the camera to where the drop will be in the pan.

Time the external flashes to go off when the camera's shutter goes off.

Set your camera to burst mode or action mode so it will take multiple images. This will improve your chances of getting a picture of the drop of water just at the right time. Set the timer on your camera.

Fill the water dropper with water and hold it 30 to 60 centemeters above the surface of the water.

Drop water drops into the pan when your camera starts taking photos by gently squeezing the bulb of the eyedropper or turkey baster.

Tokina Vs. Tamron Macro Lens

Activities for Enlarging a Picture to Scale

Photo editing programs can usually resize a photo to scale. However, resizing the photo will not increase the pixel count. With digital images, the pixel count is the number of squares in the image. Images contain colored squares, which are normally so small that the human eye can't see them. However, enlarging the squares will make the image look increasingly more pixelated with the squares becoming increasingly more visible.

Resizing the photo requires steps that vary from program to program. For example, in Photoshop, you click the Image menu, scroll down and select Image Size. The dialogue box will contain the height and width of the image, which you can adjust by deleting the old number and typing in a new number. Normally, when you resize the height or width, the other dimension will remain the same, distorting the image. However, clicking the Constrain Proportions checkbox will keep both dimensions proportional to each other.

You can remove the pixels when the program you are using has a blur feature. Blur the areas where you see squares or jagged edges. However, this can reduce the quality of the image and make the image appear more blurry. Take the highest resolution photos possible. While these photos will take up more digital space, they can be made much larger without compromising the image quality.

If you do not want to learn how to resize a photo using a photo editor, instead use one of many websites devoted to resizing pictures for users. These websites allow you to upload the image to a system. A program on the website resizes the image then allows the user to download it.

You should resize the image until it reaches a point where it cannot be increased in size without a loss of quality. Fortunately, Photoshop can easily resize in 10 percent increments and maintain image quality using a feature called the bicubic smoother. The image will not seem to lose quality for a few increments, but will eventually start to degrade, so pay attention to the image quality and stop increasing the image size when it degrades. You can use the Undo feature found under the Edit drop-down menu or press Ctrl + Z to undo a photo resize once the image degrades.

Many standard printers cannot print large photos because of the dimensions of the printer. Those who want to print much larger photos will need large format printers designed for printing larger pieces of paper, as well as a larger medium to print on.

How to Use a Scanner to Determine Pinhole Size

When you're making a pinhole camera, it's important to know the pinhole's diameter. This will help you determine the focal length. You don't have to be perfectly accurate, you just need to have a good idea of of the pinhole you've made. You can make a rough assessment of the size of the pinhole using a strong magnifier such as a jeweler's loupe and a ruler. A more accurate method is to use a flatbed image scanner and an image editing program.

Instructions

Lay the ruler diagonally from corner to corner on the square of sheet metal and draw a line using the permanent marker. Repeat on the other diagonal, making a cross. The center of the cross marks the center of the metal.

Place the square of metal on the scrap wood, holding it down by the edges. Strike the center of the metal lightly with the ball-peen hammer, raising a small dome.

Rub the domed area on the sandpaper. You are aiming to thin it slightly, not sand all the way through. Keep checking the surface of the dome. When you've made a slightly flat area on top of the dome, hold the metal up to the light to check you haven't sanded through the metal.

Hold the sewing needle by its sides. Gently press it against the center of the inside of the dome. Do not push the needle through the metal -- you are trying to raise a tiny bump on the top of the dome. Turn the metal over and look to see if the needle has raised a bump. If not, sand the top of the dome a little more, then test with the needle again. Make sure you position the needle in the same place as before -- there will probably be a small mark. Repeat until you can raise a bump in the thinnest part of the metal.

Stroke the sandpaper across the top of the small bump, making one or two gentle passes. Do not press too hard. Lay the metal domed-side down on the pad of paper or book. Gently press the point of the needle into the mark from before. Hold the metal up to the light again; you may already be able to see a point of light. If not, press the needle into the bump again and test again. Keep doing this until you can see a tiny pinprick of light. Do not press the needle all the way through the hole -- just the tip.

Turn on the computer and the scanner. Lay the metal square on the bed of the scanner. Scan the metal; you may need to press the "scan" button or your scanner may be operated from the computer. Save the scanned image.

Launch your image manipulation software and open the scanned image of the metal. Zoom in on the pinhole. If your software has a ruler tool, you can use this to measure the hole. If not, you may be able to use the "select" tool: draw a square around the exact edge of the pinhole, then bring up the information on the selected area. This should include the measurements of the hole in inches or millimeters. You can also use the number of pixels to measure the size of the pinhole: divide the number of pixels across the pinhole by the dots per inch in the scan (9,600 dots per inch -- dpi -- is a typical figure). The result is the diameter in fractions of an inch.

Compare the size of the pinhole to the desired diameter. If your pinhole is too small, enlarge it by twirling the needle's point in the hole and check the diameter again. If it is too large, it's a good idea to mark the diameter on the metal with a permanent marker and set the metal aside; if you intend to make more cameras, you may want a pinhole with a similar diameter in future.

Posing Tips for a Male Model

Male models are not as much in demand as female models, mostly because more shopping is done by or for women. Despite this, there are still lucrative career opportunities for male models. Being able to pose in different ways will mean you will be suitable for a range of different jobs, which will enhance your chances of success.

Work with the photographer, posing naturally, listening to the photographer's requests and making helpful suggestions. Your poses will tend to be conservative, shot against a white background. You will probably be asked to wear several different outfits during the shoot, perhaps as many as 20 or 30 outfits in a day. Change outfits quickly to give the photographer more time to get the shots required. When doing shoots to demonstrate products other than clothing, such as orbital sanders and sofas, you may be required to hold, sit on or point at objects. Pose with conviction, taking the job seriously, even if you feel self-conscious about, for example, having to point at an air filtration system in what feels like an unrealistic way.

Fashion magazines are trying to stand out from the crowd and so tend to have models in creative, artistic and individualistic poses. The photographer will probably have a specific idea of what is required, having been briefed by the magazine. Available jobs include magazine editorials, cologne ads, calendars, sportswear and sleepwear. Model Todd Riegler suggests that you study fashion magazines and learn the classic poses. Susan Wood Gearhart, an authority on modeling careers, says you might be called upon to hold a pose for about five minutes, which does not seem too onerous, before having a break, then resuming the pose. The work can be tedious, according to Gearhart, and you need to have patience. Also, you have to be able to work for people who may be demanding and not easy to get along with. Further, you may need to be able to commit to a project over an extended period of days or weeks and be able to accurately replicate a pose you held previously.
