How to Set the Shutter Speed on a Canon EOS 40D

Setting the shutter speed on your Canon EOS 40D will allow you to adjust the way movement is recorded on your digital images. A fast shutter speed will freeze movement. This is great to stop fast action sports, or hummingbirds sipping nectar. A slow shutter speed will show the blur of movement. This will help make beautiful waterfall landscape photographs or show the trailing movement of lights on a carnival ride at dusk. "Do you need to discover digital photography methods that bring expert photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques would likely guide you out in doing so. To obtain amazing images we initially need to look at some fundamental photography techniques. The most important one I am able to share with you is find out about light. You can locate everything about photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Whenever you discover about light and in what way it interacts with the direct environment then your pictures will get superior..".

Instructions

    1

Decide what type of movement you want to show with the digital photos you will be shooting. Choose if you want to freeze motion, or show the blur of motion. Envision your final photograph.

    2

Understand a little about shutter speed numbers before setting your Canon EOS 40D camera. A larger number on the LCD screen is the equivalent to a faster shutter speed. A smaller number will equal a slower shutter speed.

    3

Turn on your Canon EOS 40D digital camera by pressing the bar on the back to the uppermost position with the small line.

    4

Rotate your command dial to the TV setting on the top left side of your camera. This is the small round wheel. Look in the LCD screen on the top right part of your Canon camera for a screen full of data. On the top left, you will see a number that represents your shutter speed.

    5

Understand the shutter speed number. If you see a 60" for example, that means your shutter speed is set to 1/60th of a second. That means your camera is recording the scene for a very small portion of a second.

    6

Locate the rolling wheel above the LCD screen. Rotate the wheel to the left, to decrease the number on the screen. This will set your shutter speed to a slower setting, allowing your pictures to show blur and movement.

    7

Rotate the rolling wheel to the right to increase your shutter speed. The larger the number, the faster your shutter speed. This will help you to stop fast action movements.

    8

Understand common shutter speeds. For most photographers, the slowest shutter speed they will use without a tripod, and still get sharp pictures is 1/60th of a second, or 60" on your LCD screen. To stop outdoor, daytime sports, you might use a setting of 1000". To show the blur of water rushing over rocks in a stream, you might use a shutter speed setting of 0/5", or 5 seconds, with the camera mounted to a tripod.

How to Minimize Photo File Size

How to Minimize Photo File Size

Today's digital cameras with imaging sensors ranging up to 21 megapixels are capable of producing some fairly large digital images. "Would you like to learn digital photography solutions that bring experienced photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques could assist you out in doing so. To obtain stunning photographs we primary want to look at some essential photography techniques. The preliminary one I am able to share with you is identify about light. You can obtain every little thing regarding photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Whenever you uncover about light and in what method it interacts with the direct environment then your photos will get better..". And while you may need all of the information and resolution come printing time, if you are using the image online or in a presentation, you can minimize the photo file size to speed up the process and help keep the overall size of the presentation or gallery from becoming too large. Just remember to save the minimized file as a version, or a new file from the original. This way, you still have the larger original file for future use or printing.

Instructions

    1

Open the photo you want to adjust by double-clicking the file. This will open the JPEG file into the editor of your choice.

    2

In the menu toolbar select some variation of "Image size" or "Image properties." Each program changes the menu a little from program to program. You are looking for the option where you can reduce the resolution of your JPEG file.

    3

Minimize your file size by changing the resolution, or dots per inch (DPI). When you are printing a JPEG photo you want the DPI to be as detailed as possible, at about 300. For computer or online uses, a DPI of 72 is more than enough.

    4

After adjusting the DPI to 72, click "Save as". A new menu box will appear where you can select the compression level of the file, which will also help minimize the size of your photo file. In this case, since you have already reduced the file by two thirds, keep the setting at 7 to 9. Anything lower and you run the risk of the image displaying jagged lines. The scale runs from 1 to 12, with one being the lowest quality setting and 12 being the highest quality setting.

How to Make Studio Lights

How to Make Studio Lights

Studio lights are lights used by photographers in a studio. Most photographers use two or three lights; however, a single photo studio light can provide sufficient lighting. Two of the same kind of lights are often used by photographers as both a key light and fill light.

Instructions

    1

Buy a 500-watt tungsten or daylight bulb from a photography supply store. You can buy a stronger or weaker bulb, but 500 watts should be plenty for most studios. The bulb should come with a housing. The cost will vary by manufacturer. "Would you like to discover digital photography solutions that deliver professional photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques could guide you out in doing so. To acquire impressive photographs we primary need to have to look at some essential photography methods. The primary one I am able to share with you is discover about light. You can obtain all the things concerning photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Whenever you uncover about light and in what technique it interacts with the direct environment then your images will get superior..". Make sure the housing has ports on the bottom so that it can be connected to a stand.

    2

You'll need to buy an adjustable stand for the bulb. Make sure the stand extends to meet the height requirements of the photographer. The stand also should be secure with a wide base so it does not fall over easily. Try to find a stand with an extending arm that swivels; this will allow more flexibility when shooting.

    3

Consider buying a light box or reflector umbrella. A light box goes over the bulb, and the light from the bulb is diffused through a thin white material, softening the light. A reflector umbrella connects to the bulb housing and reflects the light from the bulb. Neither of these items is necessary and the choice between them is one of preference. Cost is also negligible. Make sure to buy a light box that is compatible with different-model lights or one that has an adjustable base.

    4

Connect the light bulb housing to the stand. The stand will come with the appropriate connectors, usually a nut/screw and bolt. The bottom of the housing should have the appropriate holes for connectors to come through. Most stands and housing are made to be compatible with a number of models.

    5

Attach the light box or the reflector. Both cannot be attached at the same time. Each component will have a unique way of connecting based on the manufacturer. Reflectors look like an umbrella and will have a rod that extends from the middle and is normally inserted into the housing of the bulb. All housings should have a place for this. The light box is slightly trickier. It will rest on top of the bulb housing. Adjust the base of the box so that it connects with the housing of the bulb; again this will vary depending on the model. Make sure the housing is not touching the fabric of the light box; this can cause a fire.

    6

Plug in the light and test it out.

Hints on Outdoor Portrait Photography

Hints on Outdoor Portrait Photography

Outdoor portrait photography is governed by a set of techniques that are based off a concept called basic daylight exposure (BDE). The placement of your subject in relation to a source of light plays a major role in how the portrait will turn out. Once you have gained an understanding about these basic rules, you will be able to photograph a subject in just about any outdoor setting with professional quality and without sacrificing creativity.

Basic Daylight Exposure (BDE)

Also known as the sunny 16, BDE is the method you will use to determine the right exposure and shutter speed of the photograph you wish to take. It is based on the brightness of light during the clear, mid-day sun and is the standard for every camera. Experiment with this by going outside on a sunny day around noon with your camera. "Do you want to discover digital photography methods that bring skilled photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques could assist you out in doing so. To acquire stunning images we first want to look at some basic photography techniques. The preliminary one I am able to share with you is identify about light. You can locate everything regarding photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Whenever you discover about light and in what approach it interacts with the direct environment then your photos will get better..". If you are using 125 ISO or film speed then you will set for 1/125 shutter speed at f/16 aperture. A film speed or ISO of 200 is averaged to 1/250 at an aperture setting of f/16 etc. If it gets cloudy, you will use the same method except you will open the f/stop up two steps. To open the aperture, you lower the f/stop number. This is called an equivalent exposure and you will use this method to properly expose your photographs in any kind of outdoor light. Use the BDE chart in the resource section to get a better idea.

Light from the Front

The most basic way to light an outdoor subject in a portrait is by front lighting. This is done by having your subject facing you directly with the sun behind you -- the photographer. It will light your subject's face very well but may lack in definition do to the lack of shadow. Another problem that you may face is the need for your subject to squint her eyes in order to block the sun. One way you can get around this is to have your subject close her eyes and then count to three. On three, have her open her eyes and then quickly take the photograph.

Light from the Side

If bringing out the depth of your subject is your goal, then side lighting is the key. This is done by having your subject turned at an angle from the major source of light. Side lighting will help bring out the shadows and wrinkles of your subject and will produce more depth in your photograph.

Light from the Back

Back lighting is used to bring out a glowing effect on your subject. Position your subject so that the major source of light is behind him. Be sure to use the right exposure to avoid silhouetting your subject unless that is your intention. You can use back lighting to enhance the glow and outline of your subject's hair. Back lighting can also result in too much shadow and loss of detail, however; consider using a reflector or flash to fill in some of the shadows.

How to Adjust Skin Tone in a Digital Photo

How to Adjust Skin Tone in a Digital Photo

Photos are often more than what meets the eye. The advent of digital photography has made it easier to retouch, manipulate and edit photos after they're taken. This can be used to great effect when the lighting or color of a photo doesn't come out right, or when the photographer wants to revise the image he first saw in his display screen or viewfinder. You can adjust skin tone to improve the appearance of portraits.

Instructions

    1

Adjust color saturation. Zero saturation will turn a photo black and white; full saturation fills it with gaudy, unnatural color. The ideal balance is somewhere in between, but typically, reducing the saturation slightly will bring out more natural-looking skin tones.

    2

Lower magenta values in the color editor, if your photo software allows you to manipulate individual colors. Photos with high magenta value will make skin tone look unattractively reddish.

    3

Use the "color blend" feature of your editing software by highlighting a problematic area, selecting a good skin tone with the eyedropper tool, and filling in the problem area to match the selected tone.

    4

Increase the "warmth" setting of a photo. Warmer photos make the skin look healthier and imbue it with color.
