Photography for Pregnancy

Pregnancy photography is meant to capture one of the most life-changing events. The mood of the photographs should be a combination of joy, mystery, expectation, and solemnity. The role of the photographer is to capture the natural beauty of the mother as well as the phenomenon of birth and life.

The objective of pregnancy photography, or maternity photography, is to capture the natural beauty that is human photography. The subject of the photo is usually the baby (belly bump) with the mother acting in the photo as the vessel or giver of life. Maternity photos generally aim to capture the natural aspect of pregnancy; as such the model (mother) is often clad in very little clothing with her belly completely exposed. Usual positioning, whether standing, lying, or kneeling is for the mother to wrap one arm under her belly in an embrace, and use her other arm to slightly cover her breasts. Head-on shots are usual when the mother is wearing pants, a skirt or a drape and has either a small top above her belly or a pair of hands reaching around her back to cover her. Lying positions include propped against a wall or the model lying on her side.

Pregnancy photos often include family members of the mother such as the father of the child or the mother's other children. When the father is present in the photo, he is usually behind the mother hugging her in order to cradle her belly. Other options include holding her breasts in order to cover them, or lying with his head against the belly. When children are present, usual shots include pressing the head against the belly to "listen" to the baby (usually the child looks straight at the camera) or in the case of young children, are held in their mother's arms above her belly.

Many women (and photographers) prefer a dramatic photo filter for pregnancy photos such as black and white or dark sepia or copper. Back lighting is a common effect in silhouette photography. Creating a studio setting with white or black surroundings, shooting near a large window or in a bedroom are all classic locations. If shooting outside, the photographer usually makes sure to outfit the model in full or nearly full clothing or else shoots at the beach.

Digital Photo Editing Tutorial

Digital photography is so far advanced that nearly everyone can shoot adequate photos. Often what separates a so-so image from a stellar photograph actually happens after the shutter clicks. Basic digital photo editing techniques including cropping, adjusting brightness and contrast, and boosting colors will go a long way toward making your photos look professional.

When you apply the filter, there are several sliders that will adjust the focus. Experiment with the settings until you're happy with the results. The main subject of your photo should look completely in focus and should pop out of the background.

Zap red-eye effect from the people in your photographs so they don't resemble a demon or another nefarious creature. Red-eye happens when your camera's flash catches your photo subjects at an odd angle and reflects from their corneas. Many photo editors have automatic "red-eye removal" options. Others allow you to zoom into the image and use a brush to color over the red with more natural black or gray hues.

Size your photograph based on your planned method of presentation. For example, if you are emailing your photo or posting it online, you should save the image at 72 dpi (dots per inch) and size the picture down to a maximum of 1,000 pixels at its longest side. If you plan to print your image, save it at 300 dpi and size it to 8 inches by 11 inches.

Draw attention to your assets. If you have great teeth, smile big for the camera. If you have lovely arms, wear something that shows those arms.

Position your body in a flattering position. Turn your body at a slight angle to the camera, and bring one leg a bit in front of the other. This position has a slimming effect. Practice this position in front of a mirror so it looks natural when you pose for pictures.

Stand or sit up straight for photos. Good posture will make you look much better in photos. Avoid slouching or hunching in any way.

Lift your chin slightly to avoid a double chin. If you tilt your chin down for photos, it creates the appearance of a double chin. Yes, it does this even if you are slim.

Maintain eye contact with the camera. This will always make for a better photo as it shows confidence and charisma.

Practice posing for photos in front of a mirror, or have a friend with a digital camera take a wide range of photos of you. The more time you spend in front of the camera, the more comfortable you feel.
