10 Golden Rules of Lomography

10 Golden Rules of Lomography

Lomography is a strong creative and experimental global society that plays with analogue photography. It specializes in casual, snapshot photography and employs such techniques as bluring and over-amplified colors. Lomography has devised a set of 10 golden rules to better instruct its followers in the Lomography philosophy. Understanding these golden rules is essential in capturing what Lomography believes to be the most outstanding photographs.

Lomography History

In the early 1990s, two Austrian students discovered a Russian camera known as the Lomo Kompakt Automat. This begun their quest to find a new style of experimental, unorthodox photography. The message and style quickly spread, as people around the planet begged for Lomo LC-As. A worldwide distribution contract was soon in the works for the little camera. The 10 golden rules were developed along with guiding principals, exhibitions, events and world congresses. New products, films and accessories became rapidly available.

10 Golden Rules

In order to achieve and understand Lomography philosophy, it is advised that the following rules be memorized and recited by heart. These steps will bring you closer to the ideology they wish to propose. Expert Lomography photographers suggest you "throw all your inhibitions about photography to the wind."

    1. Take your camera everywhere you go.

You can never plan when a picture perfect opportunity will arise. The best photos come from spontaneous, impulsive, and unpredictable events, so you can never be too prepared.

    2. Use it any time -- day and night.

You do not perceive life solely during the day, you are perceiving it at all times of the day, therefore your photographs should reflect that.

    3. Lomography is not an interference in your life, but part of it.

Your camera is a part of you. Anything you do, your camera will do. It is no mere hobby, it is an extension of you.

    4. "Would you like to understand digital photography methods that bring experienced photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques would assist you out in doing so. To get impressive photos we first need to look at some essential photography methods. The most important one I am able to share with you is uncover about light. You can discover everything about photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Whenever you learn about light and in what approach it interacts with the direct environment then your photos will get superior..". Try the shot from the hip.

Don't be confined to the normal viewpoint of the photographer. Shoot from many different angles; you'd be surprised what you are missing.

    5. Approach the objects of your Lomographic desire as close as possible.

Your passion and love for a topic or item will shine through your photography. If something feels right, take a picture of it.

    6. Don't think.

Your first impressions are often the most beautiful. Over-thinking can bring in boring abstract elements you didn't mean to create.

    7. Be fast.

It's important to be as quick as the world around us. Don't hesitate, just shoot.

    8. You don't have to know beforehand what you captured on film.

Different and unexpected situations are a Lomographer's best friend. Don't worry about what you are capturing, thrive in the unpredictability.

    9. You don't have to know afterwards either.

Don't try to analyze your photographs with a generic perspective. You are trying something new; look at them differently, and understand them differently.

    10. Don't worry about any rules.

Listen to yourself, and follow whatever rules you find to be true. Follow your ultimate dreams and desires.

And so you have it. These rules summarize the Lomography philosophy, and once mastered, allows you to join in the movement.

The Lomography Mission

Lomography is devoted to becoming an international socio-cultural movement, using photography as an outlet of creativity. Adherents wish to capture the world, all the while experimenting with creative visual expression. The focus is to capture the unique, while furthering interest in analogue photography.

How to Choose a Wide Angle Lens

The world of photo lenses can be confusing, especially to someone who is unfamiliar with the terms. What are all the letters, dashes and numbers? Before considering purchasing a wide angle lens, or any photographic lens for a digital SLR camera, you need to understand what the numbers and dashes mean. The little f does not stand for fun, but rather f-stop or aperture, which is the size of the lens opening. "mm" refers to the lens focal length and anything under 35 is a wide angle. Once you know what you want, the issues become price, brand and need.

Instructions

    1

Consider the brand war. Lens brands are serious war material among photographers. Is a powerful name brand lens such as a Nikkor or Canon better than the less prestigious brands such as a Sigma or even a consumer grade brand? Yes and no. Glass quality does appear in tests to be superior in Nikkor lenses than Sigma brands, but it is nearly impossible to detect differences in image quality produced. "Do you want to discover digital photography methods that bring expert photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques could assist you out in doing so. To find spectacular photographs we primary want to look at some basic photography methods. The primary one I am able to share with you is identify about light. You can find everything concerning photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Whenever you uncover about light and in what technique it interacts with the direct environment then your pictures will get better..". In the brand war, the solution lies in your willingness and ability to spend a greater amount for the same size and function lens.

    2

Compare price. Strongly correlated to the brand is the price. The more powerful the brand, the higher the price. If price is a factor in your decision making process, then the simpler, more affordable brand Sigma (like the Sigma 20 f1.8) is your best bet for a quality lens at a fraction of the cost. If price is no object, the Nikkor 17-35/2.8 or Nikkor 20 f2.8 are ideal starts. Price comparison sites on the Internet are a good place to search for the best deals.

    3

Use Internet sources to research. Trial and comparison is the only way to determine the quality of a lens. The Internet is a useful source to find testimonials of photographers who have experimented with various lenses you are considering. Photography forums are a helpful place to start. There are literally dozens of forums, blogs, and chat groups for the singular purpose of discussing experiences and comparing results. Photographers are ideal candidates who will be able to tell you about lens performance. The photography world is a craft community, and if you are interested, there are always those willing to help you find what you want if you seek their help.

    4

Consider your personal photography need. You need to become extremely familiar with your camera and know what types of lenses will fit properly into your base. Thoroughly "browse" through your user's guide, no matter what the make or model of your camera. Digital SLR cameras take many years to properly master. Once you understand your camera's anatomy, you will be able to confidently purchase lenses, such as wide angle or telephoto, without fear or uncertainty. Remember the wide angle lens you choose should reflect your role in photography. If you are considering a role in wedding photography, a wide angle lens is used most frequently by wedding photographers. A wide angle focal length of less than 21 mm commonly shoots architecture photos. A 21 to 35mm wide angle lens works well for landscape photography.

How to Use Strobe Lights in Photography

Strobe lights are basically large or small detachable flashes that are commonly called cold lights in photography. The reason is that these lights are relatively cool compared to hot lights, those studio lights which are always on and get hot enough to set fire to a phone book. The advantage with cold lights is you don't have to sweat and waste a lot of energy; the disadvantage is they can be more difficult to meter and control, because they aren't always one. Read on to learn how to use strobe lights in photography.

Instructions

    1

Set up your subject in your studio in a light box, blocking off the ambient light you do not want in the photograph, either from the back, or side. It depends on how you want to make your subject look.

    2

Set up your camera and compose the subject in your view finder.

    3

Position your strobes so they throw the correct light on your subject. To add definition choose a hard angle with the strobe facing towards the texture of the subject. Or light just one side, and create a starkly contrasting shot, with one side lit and another in shadow.

    4

Attach your camera sync cord to the flash, and perform the metering for the shot. "Do you need to understand digital photography approaches that bring expert photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques might guide you out in doing so. To get impressive pictures we initially need to look at some basic photography strategies. The initial one I am able to share with you is uncover about light. You can come across all the things about photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Each time you find out about light and in what approach it interacts with the direct environment then your photos will get better..". Your camera should adjust to the power output of the strobe light, however, if you are concentrating the strobe's light with a honey comb, or placing it very close to the subject, you may want to adjust the exposure a few stops.

    5

Shoot your photos and if using a digital camera, check out your result on your computer and make the adjustments you need to make. Remember, the strobes will throw a decent amount of light, but unlike constant hot lights you have to use a little judgment and imagination to get the correct exposure and look you are searching for.

How to Become a Photographer Without Going to School

If you have an interest in photography it is pretty simple to become a great photographer without going to school. The key is to practice and practice some more. Many great photographers have been self-taught and you can do the same. Just be aware that while photography is fun, it is also work. Read on to learn how to become a photographer without going to school.

Instructions

Know Your Equipment:

    1

Buy the highest end digital camera you can afford. Choose a good name brand with a high mega-pixel number. "Would you like to understand digital photography techniques that deliver expert photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques would likely guide you out in doing so. To obtain impressive images we first need to have to look at some fundamental photography strategies. The preliminary one I am able to share with you is determine about light. You can find all the things concerning photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Each time you uncover about light and in what approach it interacts with the direct environment then your photos will get much better..". An eight or above is a good starting point. A higher mega-pixel will insure sharper, clearer photos.

    2

Study the camera functions until you know where the basic buttons are without having to search. You should be able to turn it on, snap a picture and view it in the view finder. You should be able to delete that picture if necessary. Learn these functions in advance of starting to take pictures.

    3

Keep the camera set on automatic for picture taking. In the beginning, it will know what speed or aperture setting is best, better than you will. You can change it to portrait, sports or landscape, if you feel comfortable with that. Also know how to turn the flash off and on. Refer to your camera manual with help on this.

    4

Buy the best camera bag you can afford as well. It should have divided sections, and several easily accessible pockets. As your knowledge grows, so will your collection of camera equipment, such as different lenses, filters and memory cards. You want it large enough to accommodate the camera and leave extra room for adding things, but you don't want it to be so large you can't comfortably have it over your shoulder and still be able to work the camera.

Getting in Some Practice

    5

Start taking pictures. Go for a walk and search out what ever you think might be a great picture. Center the focal point in the viewing screen. Most digital cameras let you know when the picture is focused and the camera is ready. Take a lot of different types pictures.

    6

Load the pictures onto your computer, following the instructions that came with the camera or photographic soft ware. Study all of the pictures and make mental notes of how well you like them, or what you could have done differently. If you like the photos, save them in a folder marked "First Set."

    7

When you are comfortable taking "stills," move on to live things. Practice with your children, your pets or other family members that are willing to help. The key is to practice, study, practice and study some more. Keep referring back to your first set, so that you actually see improvement.

    8

Study photographic tips. You can buy books or magazines or you can find a lot of information on the Internet about how to take great pictures. Practice the tips you learn. Learn to look at everything as if you are looking through a viewfinder. If your mind thinks it is a great view, snap it with your camera.

    9

Offer to take free pictures of your family's children or pets. Always take your camera to family gatherings or events. With digital cameras there is no expensive film to waste, so take all of the shots you want. If they are not to your liking, you can delete them and try again.

How to Set a Camera for a Neutral Density Filter

How to Set a Camera for a Neutral Density Filter

When you want to decrease your shutter speed to shoot a long exposure, like taking a photo of a waterfall to turn the water into a silky-looking flow, you need to decrease the amount of light coming into the camera. One way to reduce the light is by adding a neutral density filter to your lens. A neutral density filter reduces the light entering the camera without changing the color of the light. By reducing the light, to arrive at the same exposure value -- that is, the amount of brightness -- you lengthen the shutter speed, which blurs the image.

Instructions

    1

Set your camera's ISO to 100 or its lowest value.

    2

Frame your subject with your camera and note the exposure. The exposure is the combination of the shutter speed and the f-stop. Find the values displayed inside your camera's viewfinder. For example, on a sunny day a common exposure is a shutter speed of 1/125 and an f-stop of 16.

    3

Screw the neutral density filter to your camera's lens.

    4

Determine how many stops of light the neutral density filter removes. "Do you want to discover digital photography approaches that carry expert photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques could support you out in doing so. To find impressive images we initially want to look at some fundamental photography techniques. The preliminary one I am able to share with you is figure out about light. You can locate all the things concerning photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Each time you discover about light and in what way it interacts with the direct environment then your pictures will get improved..". Most labeling systems list the common neutral density filters as 2x, 4x or 8x. This means 1-stop, 2-stops or 3-stops of light removed, respectively. Darker filters reduce the light further; refer to the filter's instructions to find out by how much.

    5

Decrease the shutter speed by the number of stops of light removed. Do this by halving the shutter speed for each stop. For example, if the shutter speed is 1/125 and you remove two stops of light, then the shutter speed becomes 1/30. When you halve 1/125, you get 1/60, and for the second stop of light you halve again and get 1/30. For a third stop of light, the shutter speed becomes 1/15.

    6

Set the new shutter speed on the camera using the appropriate dial.
