How to Merge Two Photographs Together. There may be times when you want to merge two or more photographs into one. The example in this article is one of those times. On vacation together, my wife and I took photographs of each other in front of the famous Club Paradiso in Amsterdam. We had been there the night before to see the band, Tom Tom Club and had actually met them at breakfast in our hotel that morning. However, there was nobody on the street to ask to take our photograph together so we took individual shots. In this article I will explore the different features of Adobe Photoshop Elements that enable you to merge photographs together in a variety of ways. It is not difficult, but does require some patience and practice with the different tools and wizards. Instructions

Open Adobe Photoshop Elements in the Photo Editor mode. Next, open the images you want to use in the bin. Simply choose OPEN from the file menu and hold shift while you click on multiple images to open.

Photoshop Elements has a group merge function that allows you to open photographs and use pencil and eraser tools to select areas for merging. To use this function, open your photos in the bin and then select NEW from the file menu. Select GROUP MERGE and choose ADD OPEN FILES and click OK. The group merge menu allows you to use a PENCIL tool to select the item from the SOURCE file you want to merge with the FINAL image. You can also use the alignment tool to align the source and final images. This works great for images with identical backgrounds. It did not work well with my example images, however, so I had to use another tool to achieve my result.

To create the image of us together, I needed to use the Panorama feature of Adobe Photoshop Elements. Click on the FILE menu and select NEW. Choose Photo Merge Panorama to open the Panorama menu. Click ADD OPEN FILES to add the files you have open in the bin. Notice you have five different choices of panoramas. I selected REPOSITION ONLY since I wanted to merge the two elements without changing the perspective of the original image. Once you have made your choice, click OK.

The image will open in a new window. You can select each part of the image separately and move them to align the image the way you want it. You can zoom in on the image to make critical choices. Once you click OK, the new image will open in the Adobe Photoshop Elements image window.

You will notice that the new image has some white space around it. The new image required some alignment since the images weren't shot exactly the same. Using any of these tools will cause some white space due to the way the images are aligned. The white space needs to be cropped out of the picture using the standard cropping tools. There you have it, both of us in front of the Club Paradiso. It is an easy-to-use creative feature that allows you to control history in some small way.

What is Sepia Good for?

The term sepia refers to a brown tone added to photographs that is similar to black and white. Its origins can be traced back to a substance that was added to black and white photographs in the late 1700s for preservation purposes.

Photos with a sepia tone have a vintage feel because of the history identified with this type of coloration.

Placing a sepia tone on a photograph makes it more classic and timeless. It takes the emphasis away from the colors, which may be a sign of the time period the photograph was taken in.

Sometimes color can be distracting to a photo and turning it into sepia will refocus the emphasis. For example, a large red object in the background of a portrait will draw the eyes away from the person and toward the background if left in color.

Many people feel that the brown tones of sepia add extra romance to the feeling of the photograph. There is no technical reason for this. It is simply a personal preference.

Sepia is often used instead of black and white when the photograph is going to be framed in wood tones. Can I Make My Own Light Box to View Negatives?

Film negatives are used to create finished photos. They are the image that is created by a traditional film camera. Most photographers take many pictures, but develop only a few to save on costs. This is accomplished by viewing the negatives before printing the photographs. Most photographers use a light box to send light through the negatives from behind to make viewing easier.

Making a light box is surprisingly easy. The most important step in making a homemade light box is getting the right materials. Buying a light box from a retail store can cost upward of $300, so the materials used will be the greatest source of savings. You will need particleboard, glass, glass frosting and lights to create your light box. These materials should all be readily available at your local hobby store.

The glass is perhaps the most important element. It is important to use frosted glass, which will let light though without enabling everything behind it to distract from the picture. The easiest and cheapest way to get frosted glass is to remove the glass from an inexpensive, 5 x 7 or 8 x 10 picture frame. Hobby stores sell spray paint-like glass frosting, which is the cheapest and fastest alternative to etching the glass. Apply this to the glass and allow it to dry while you work on the rest of the light box.

Make the box to hold the glass and lights out of simple particleboard. You will need to make it large enough to hold the glass from your picture frame. Make the base about one inch larger than the dimensions of the frame, and then add a frame on the top that goes in about an inch to fit around the glass. Add brackets under the frame to hold the glass. You may paint the box black to create a cleaner look for it, but this is optional.

Install lights along the bottom of the frame in the box. These are available at a hobby or hardware store. Use a lower wattage for these lights so they do not put out too much heat. Use brackets to hold them in place along the frame. Drill a hole in the box, and then thread the cord out through it to plug it in.

The glass should be dry by the time the box and lights are complete. Using care not to break the glass, set it into the brackets on the frame. This will complete the light box. It should end up being much less expensive than buying one outright, and it will still maintain all the functionality of a commercially available light box.

How to Make a Long Picture

A panorama is a long picture that shows a wide landscape, skyline or similar view. These pictures cannot be taken with one click of the camera, instead many pictures are taken and combined into one. This used to require physical cutting and gluing of images, but today image editing programs allow you to do the work in a fraction of the time.

Instructions

Mount the camera on a steady tripod at your shooting location. Ideally the tripod should have a level built in so that you can ensure your photos are straight.

Rotate the tripod to the left of the scene that you want to photograph.

Take the first picture.

Rotate the camera slightly to the right and take a second picture. There must be at least a 25 percent overlap of identical material between the pictures for editing.

Continue rotating the camera and taking pictures until you have captured the entire scene.

Load the pictures onto your computer, then open them in an image editing program.

Open a new image file that is slightly higher than the pictures, and as wide as all of them combined.

Copy the second photo and paste it into the new file. Move it to the left, overlapping the first. This is where the 25 percent overlap is useful.

Align the two images based on the matching overlap.

Set the program's eraser to 25 percent with soft edges.

Pass the eraser over the seam several times until the two pictures blend together. If they already line up with no visible seam, you can skip this step.

Continue adding pictures, softening the seams with the eraser.

Use the crop tool to remove anything except for the portion of the panorama that you want.

Save the file in the photo format of your choice.
