How to Photograph an Article

Photographing an article allows you to build a portfolio of tear-sheets for your professional writing career or simply preserve a valuable article about something important in your life. A copy stand is designed specifically to photograph two-dimensional artwork and provides the best option for capturing the details of your article. A copy stand keeps the camera steady while allowing the photographer to move the attached adjustable light sources to ensure no glare is present and the article is evenly lit for the best reproduction possible.

Instructions

Clip the article, also referred to as a tear-sheet, from the original publication and mount it to a piece of mat board with a thin layer of rubber cement or a glue stick. Repeat this step for multiple articles to take pictures of multiple articles at once. Adhering the articles to the mat board will cause them to lie flat during the photographic process and there will be no movement of the article during the photographing process.

How to Do a Panorama Shot Manually

You no longer have to miss out on the ideal shot when a sweeping landscape extends beyond your camera's viewfinder. Avoid adding inadequate or partial images to your vacation photo albums and instead capture the entire photograph each time. Impress your family and friends by manually executing a panorama shot using your digital camera and a few other pieces of basic photography.

Instructions

Find a spot free of obstructions to shoot the panorama. Avoid crowded areas as people can walk into the frame during one of the shots. Ensure the location is also clear of anything that will change during the process of taking each image, such as flying birds or flags. You want each image to appear as though it was taken at exactly the same time.

Check the ground, and remove any rocks or other items.

Prepare your tripod by sliding out the legs, ensuring they are even, and placing the tripod on the cleared, flat surface.

Attach the camera securely to the tripod. Make sure there is enough give, though, so that you can smoothly turn the camera.

Look through the viewfinder to ensure the shot is correctly lined up. Adjust the tripod height and camera angle as needed.

Starting with one side of the panoramic view, take your first image. Press the shutter release button carefully, or use a remote to avoid shaking the camera.

Turn the camera to encompass the next section of the panorama. Reference the first image as needed to make sure there is no overlap between the images.

Continue taking photos until you have an image for each section of the desired panorama. When taking these images, do not move the camera other than shifting from one side to the other to encompass a different portion of the panorama. Do not change the tilt of the camera or remove it from the tripod, and do not adjust the height of the tripod legs.

Review the photos before leaving the location. Retake any images that do not line up with the others. Repeat as many times as needed to avoid complications during the editing process. Imperfectly aligned images will be glaringly obvious in the final product.

Open the final set of images in your photo-editing program.

Edit the images as desired including adjusting contrast, exposure and saturation, but edit each photo to exactly the same levels. Any difference will show up in the final panorama image, so be careful. Avoid cropping the image but, if cropping is necessary, ensure each image is the same size, including width, length and resolution.

Multiply the amount of pictures by the width of one image to get the full size of the panorama shot.

Create a new file in your photo-editing program. Adjust the size of the new file to the calculated panorama size. If you are using Adobe Photoshop, select "Canvas Size" from the "Image" menu, and change the values in the "Width" and "Height" fields.

Copy each image, and paste into the new file. You will be moving each image around in the new file, so make sure each image is pasted as a different layer. You may have to manually insert a new layer before pasting, depending on what program you use, but if you are using Photoshop, just type the shortcut "Control" plus "V" in Windows or "Command" plus "V" on a Mac to automatically paste the images as individual layers.

Move the image layers so they are in the correct order from left to right. Make slight adjustments to ensure they are properly aligned, as needed. Then, save your completed panorama shot.

Art Projects Using Photography

Photography is diverse, ranging from simple family photos to abstract images as modern art. Modern digital technology has added another dimension to photography allowing for unique manipulation of photos. Photography can offer something for everyone including: nature photos, architectural photos, portraits, abstract and more.

Cutting striking photos from magazines and assembling them together will create a great photo collage.

You need magazines, scissors, glue sticks, and paper or canvases for this project. Collect or purchase magazines. Some magazines known for their strong photography are National Geographic, Vogue, Time and Rolling Stone. Cut photos from the magazines which are appealing or fit a theme. Possible themes are fashion photography, portraits, nature photography, architectural photography, black and white photography or photo-journalism. Glue the photos to the paper or the canvas until the collage is formed.

Creating a self-portrait is an opportunity to reveal something about yourself.

You will need a camera with film or memory card and a self-timer, a tripod and a developing or printing source for this project. Self-portraits, like autobiographies, reveal something of yourself. Creating a self-portrait is an opportunity to tell others who you are, on your own terms. Set your camera on your tripod and set the self-timer. Place yourself in a setting that characterizes you. If you like the outdoors, for instance, you could take the picture on a favorite trail. Develop or print the photo.

Using a Polaroid camera you can create a unique photo series.

Polaroid cameras and film are not as easily available as they once were. If you have access to one or can find one to buy, they are really fun, easy to use and create neat images. Instant printing is the distinctive feature of a Polaroid, allowing you to easily change your subject, lighting or angle and reshoot for another print. Instructions

Set up your main light at least 4 feet away from your subject. Place it 45 degrees from your subject if you want to show details and shadows such as the sleek curves of a car. Set up your fill-in light. Your main light has thrown a strong shadow once you have placed it in position. Your fill-in light will soften this shadow and show some details on that dark side. Set up your background light. This light is used to separate the subject so it will not blend in with the background. You have the option of lighting the whole background or just a small area. Plain black or white backgrounds work well in studio automotive photography. A warehouse setting is also a popular background to show an industrial look.

Set up your camera and take test shots. Hot lights give off a yellowish color cast. This can be neutralized by setting your white balance to "Tungsten" or "Incandescent." Preview your camera's LCD after each test shot. Move the lights closer to photograph the interiors of a car or farther away to get the desired intensity of light.

Use a light meter to determine the right camera-speed-and-aperture setting. To get a sharp image from the bumper to the tail end of a car, use a small lens opening or aperture. A wide-angle lens will be very useful to take an image of the entire length of a car if you're in a small shooting area.

Upload your photos to a computer and edit if necessary. In a photo editing program you can crop, resize, touch up, recolor and do a lot of effects to your image. If you've used a wide-angle lens, check for linear distortions or straight lines that appear to be curved. To fix this in Photoshop, use the "Straighten" tool or the "Transform-Linear Perspective" tool.

How to Put Graffiti on Pictures

Graffiti is a popular style of art that is very colorful and abstract. Putting graffiti on your pictures can add an extra eye-catching feature to your photo. You can easily write a name, or a logo or message or other text in graffiti style on your picture. Use Microsoft Paint (which comes as a standard application on PCs) or other image editing software of your choice. To put graffiti on pictures, all you'll need to do is open your picture in the image editing software and begin your graffiti design.

Instructions

Open Microsoft Paint. Click "Start", "Accessories", and "Paint" to open Microsoft Paint.

Open the picture you want to put graffiti on in Paint. Click "File", "Open", the select the image you want to add graffiti from your hard drive. Then click "Open" to load the image.

Begin your graffiti design by creating your base text or design. To make your graffiti look unique and realistic, you will use several tools and methods to create your final graffiti. If you want to add graffiti text onto your picture, you can start by drawing the base or outline text freehand using the Brushes tool, or you can use the Text tool to type in your text.

If you want to draw your base text or design freehand, click the "Brushes" button and select which type of brush you want. Next, click the "Size" button to choose the size of your brush.

You're now ready to draw your freehand text or design onto your picture. To begin your graffiti design using Text, click the "A" in the Tools section to select the Text tool. Draw a rectangular box in the area where you want to place your text, then enter your text. Adjust the font, size and color of the text until you've reached your desired results.

Add dimension, texture, and accents to complete your graffiti design. Now that you have created the base text or design for your graffiti, you will add accents until you've achieved the perfect graffiti for your picture. You will use different techniques to add highlights, shadowing, and effects to your graffiti. Begin by selecting a bright contrasting color to the base text color. Then click the "Brushes" button and select the "Crayon" tool. Even though it's designed to look like a crayon when used, you can also use the Crayon tool to create the effect of spray paint, or give your graffiti different textures.

Draw shadows and/or accents around your base text/design. Next, in the Brushes menu, select the "Watercolor Brush", select another bright color and draw on more accents to your base design/text. The Watercolor Brush has a bit of opacity that again gives your graffiti a textured look. You can also use the Airbrush tool in the Brushes menu to add another level of texture. Repeat this process using different brushes and colors, adding details until you've achieved your desired results.

Review your picture and save it. Review your graffiti design for any changes that may be needed. Select "File", "Print", then "Print Preview" to see how your picture will look when printed. Once you've reviewed your picture and made any necessary changes, save the image to your desktop. Put your name in a credit line and the date in a small typeface in one corner.
