How to Repaint Nikon Lens

A Nikon 35mm lens, or any brand of lens, due to long-term usage can show scratches and worn off paint on the barrel which exposes its underlying base of brass. Although aesthetics won't impact performance of the lens, it is possible to paint the metal portions to make it look close to new. Rather than offering an old-looking lens, some people repaint lenses to command a higher selling price.

Instructions

Put masking tape on the front and back side glass of the lens. You can touch-up only the worn-off paint or completely refinish all the black-painted areas. Cover with tape only the parts on the lens barrel that doesn't need repainting.

Lay down the lens with the front glass down in a flat surface. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, take precautions to avoid harmful spray mists and vapors. Spray test on the newspaper and check for consistent mist flow prior to spraying on the lens. Spray paint thinly on the surface of the lens in a sweeping vertical or horizontal motion.

Let the paint dry in a cool and dry place. Never leave the lens under direct sunlight to protect its glass elements.

Repeat Steps 2 and 3 to respray if necessary. If respraying is not needed, take off the masking tape to reveal the newly painted lens barrel.

Fill with white or color paint, by hand, any lettering that was covered by the black paint. Use a very fine pointed paint brush that is usually sold in arts and crafts stores. Let the paint totally dry again.
