What Are Bloom Effects?

Photo editing programs such as Photoshop and GIMP have lead to hundreds of effects and manipulation options to enhance photographs. Many of these are used to add extra light, from removing darkness in the entire image to making shining or reflective surfaces even brighter. In imaging, "bloom" refers to one such lighting technique, which is becoming increasingly common.

Bloom effects are typically added to create a fringe or feathering effect around very bright objects. The overall appearance is to make the image brighter and more realistic. Essentially, if a light source is behind or reflecting an object in the picture, the bloom adds a fuzzing at the edges meant to simulate the way the sun illuminates real objects.

All photographic lens, even particularly good ones, are imperfect in photographing intense light. As an example, if a photograph is taken indoors with the sun shining through the window and then reflecting off certain objects in the room, the camera may tune to the reflections while the light through the window is dulled to compensate for the other lights. The bloom effect is meant to better capture the way light acts in real life by removing this dampening effect and allowing the light to appear as brightly in the picture as it does to the eye.

Bloom effects can sometimes be spotted by noting a color bleed at the edge of a light source. Lights shining through windows, for example, may have a blue fringe at the end as a result of the bloom effect, which is realistic to how the window appears in real life. As well, other objects in the light source can have a soft or feathered border instead of a hard outline.

Many video games for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii gaming consoles, as well as for the PC, make judicious use of blooms to add realism to the lighting effects. However, sometimes this leads to washing out of the colors, obstruction of the on-screen objects or a monotony in the game's imagery. The use of bloom effects is also growing in movies, especially those which make heavy use of computer-generated environments, to add style, mood and realism to the image.
