How to Use an 18% Grey Card

An 18 percent gray card is a great tool for both amateur and professional photographers. The card is painted a specific shade of gray that reflects 18 percent of the light that reaches it. Because a camera does not see in color, this is perfect for adjusting a camera's light meter. This adjustment helps prevent over- and under-exposed film. Some experience with the camera's settings and options is helpful.

Instructions

Set the camera to manual mode. If the camera is in automatic mode, it will adjust the white balance itself even after it is changed.

Position the gray card in front of the subject being photographed. Have a model or assistant hold the card so that it is vertical. A leaning card will cause problems with the white balance.

Take a picture of the card. The card does not need to fill the picture, but it should take up a substantial portion.
