How to Upload Photography

Taking photos can be a great hobby, especially when you share those photos with friends and family. In order to share those photos digitally, individuals must find a way to move those photographs from their camera onto a computer. Luckily, many computers come with built in memory card readers commonly found in digital cameras. Computers that don't have a card reader can still be used by connecting the computer and camera to one another with a USB cable. Before you can transfer your images, you'll want to pull out the USB cable that came with your camera or remove the memory card from the camera.

Instructions

Turn off your camera. Check your computer or laptop's documentation to see if it came with a memory card reader. Remove the memory card from your camera and insert it into the appropriate memory card slot. Refer to your computer's documentation for the location of the card reader before inserting the memory card. If your computer doesn't have a card reader, you can transfer data with a USB cable.

Take out your USB cable that came with the camera and look on your camera for a place to plug it in. Most USB connection areas on the camera are close to where the memory card or batteries would go. Connect the larger end of your USB cable into your computer or laptop's USB port. You can usually find USB slots in the front and back of computers and along the sides on a laptop.

Wait for your computer to register the new hardware. This will open a new window. Click on the "Open folder to view files" to look at the contents of your digital camera. Locate the photos you'd like to upload and copy them onto your computer.

Open a photo editing program such as Photoshop, Paintshop Pro or Gimp and resize your images to about 600 by 800 pixels. This will make the file smaller and easier to share with friends online. Save the resized version of your photo as "photo name small" as to not overwrite the original.

Join a photo sharing site such as "photobucket.com," "flickr.com" or "snapfish.com" so you can upload your photos to a public area. (Resources 1, 2, and 3)

Upload your images by logging in to your preferred site and browsing your computer for the smaller version of your photo.

Click "Okay" once you're ready to upload the image. Wait until the file finishes uploading before adding details such as a title, description and keywords. Save your image when you're ready.

Copy the link or location where you've uploaded your photos and paste it into emails you send to friends. You can also attach the photo to an email.
