Nonlinear warping is one of the more avant-garde tools in the modern art photographer's toolkit. Images can be created that range from whimsical to realistic. Available in most graphics kits, a warp is also easy to apply.
History
Nonlinear warping was first utilized by mapmakers. Ancient maps used often quite creative means to fit mountains into the flat page and oceans into regions that didn't have the space to leave things to scale. More modern maps apply nonlinear warping to fit larger, nonplanar sweeps of our spherical planet into squares and rectangles.
Types
A number of nonlinear warps are available to the modern artist, the most common being cylindrical and hemispherical. The most common irregular warp involves selecting a series of points and then manually moving them in relation to one another. The graphics package then fills in the remainder of the warp, creating a smoothly curved distortion.
