Techniques to Photograph Airshows

Focusing on small airplanes flying very fast through the air can be difficult. Therefore, you should bring equipment that can compensate for various problems, such as underexposure or overexposure, and an out-of-focus airplane shot. However, after taking a large number of shots, youre bound to snap a couple of winners.

Useful Equipment

The only piece of equipment that you must have to take pictures of airshows is a long lens. The lens must be able to fill the entire aircraft in the frame. Prime lenses are normally sharper than zooms. However, the zoom lens can make it easier to capture a greater variety of shots. You should also take an extra set of batteries with you so you can replace them when they run out of juice. You should bring several memory cards so you do not run out of digital space.

Focusing

Photographing aircraft is like taking pictures of birds, except that they are larger and fly faster. Given their speed, focus can be a problem and can lead to out-of-focus shots. Therefore, you must make sure whatever particular type of camera uses whatever settings are the most ideal for focusing, such as the "Focus Priority" setting on the Nikon cameras.

Speed

The lens should have a high-enough speed that you can capture the shot before its too late. Faster lenses are more expensive and heavier, making them harder to work with. Some photographers use a tripod, so they do not have to hold the camera; but airshows usually have crowds of people, so finding enough space to set up the tripod can be difficult..

Exposure

Some people let cameras automatically choose their exposure settings. Cameras tend to underexpose the shots, causing the sky to be more visible than the aircraft. Spot metering tends to take the exposure of the aircraft more into account. However, keeping the aircraft in the center of the frame can be difficult and the photographer may not want the plane in the center, such as when theres more than one aircraft.

You can put your camera on manual mode and test the camera on something that has about the same brightness as the aircraft. Then, you can adjust the settings until they are correct for the ideal aircraft exposure.

Panning

You must pan with the camera. Otherwise, the shutter release will be very sudden, leading to a blurry photograph. If you are not experienced with panning, you can go to a car race and practice panning with the race cars to determine whether you can get good shots of the race.

Shooting Profusely

You should shoot as many pictures as possible. Various elements can ruin a picture, but taking a large number of shots increases the number of high-quality shots you can get. Also, many memory cards can hold hundreds of pictures, so you may as well use all the cameras potential.
