Mauna Kahalawai is in the west and is smaller than Haleakal in the east. Kahalawai is also much older and more eroded. Parts of Kahalawai are rain forest and have never been explored. The summit of Haleakal is over 10,000 feet, and while the drive is not as curvy as the Road to Hana, it can be challenging. People travel up the road at night to see the sunrise and then bike down the mountain to sea level after breakfast. Haleakal is a national park and fun to visit and photograph any time of day. The weather is changeable; one minute the sun is out, the next you are inside a cold, moist cloud. The temperature can range from 35 to 60 degrees, so you can be sure the National Park Service makes a lot of money selling sweatshirts and jackets to beach goers dressed in shorts and sandals that decide to visit at the last minute! A journey to the summit is better planned in advance--and above all else, be sure to bring the camera! Here are some photo tips I've picked up on my visits.

There are many scenic spots to stop on the accent. The views are breathtaking. The western slope of the mountain is called "Up Country" and filled with farms and some small villages. Make sure you stop on the way up to capture some of the beautiful ocean views.
2Before you enter the park you will reach the first park headquarters. If you haven't been paying attention you can stop here and buy jackets and sweatshirts. This is at about 7,000 feet. If you have been on the beach snorkeling and sucking down Mai Tais for a week, you will start to notice the altitude even here. There is another park Headquarters at 10,000 feet.
3There are great observation decks at the Park Headquarters where you can see and photograph landscapes that look more like Mars than Hawaii. If it is foggy, just wait. It will change, since there is always a wind. From here you can select different hiking trails: a climb to the summit, a hike through the crater or whatever you feel like. Move slowly if you are not used to the altitude.
4You can hike to the observatories, which will provide you with different vistas. Pictured are observatories for the United States Space Program run by the Department of Defense. Some of the areas are full of Silver Sword, which is a unique plant that blooms once and dies. It only grows on Hawaii and Maui and only above 4,500 feet.
5Each new view seems to present a different vista resembling Mars or the Moon more than Earth. The astronauts that originally went to the Moon trained on Haleakal for months to prepare for their mission.
6There are very few animals on the summit. The areas are pretty barren, but life seems to find a way. This is a photograph of a Hawaiian Partridge, which at first we thought was an N N, which is the state bird of Hawaii-and they do live on Maui but not on the summit of the volcano.
7All throughout Maui we saw rock stacking. At first we thought it was some ancient Menehune burial ritual. We found out it was actually started by hippies visiting the Island in the '60s and now they are everywhere. We found this one at the summit of the Volcano and the edge of a cliff (maybe it was the Menehune who stacked this one).
