Dynamic Lighting Effects

Dynamic lighting effects can be manipulated in several different mediums, including digital art, graphic animation, film editing or print (flat) photography. Adobe Photoshop is a staple program for lighting effect, regardless of the desired result. Using Photoshop, beginning designers and professionals can produce interesting lighting effects in a few simple steps.

Light Bloom Effect

In Photoshop, light bloom effect is used to create a feathery quality at the edges of bright objects. For bloom effect, experiment with the blending mode of a layer's image. The bloom effect is controlled on a layer by increasing or decreasing the blurred layer's opacity.

Pixelation Effect

Pixelation effect is when images carry a mosaic, blurry quality. In Photoshop, this can be accomplished simply by navigating Filter>Pixelate>Mosaic, and adjusting the controls of the cell size. On the more extreme end, the image can become quite abstract, but the pixilation effect can also be used to yield a jagged, blurry effect. Such result might resemble images on a television receiving poor reception.

Floodlight Effect

Flood light effect resembles floodlight for theatrical lighting. Floodlights intensely illuminate wide areas (buildings, for instance), and are often used in film production. In Photoshop, floodlight effect can by created by using Lighting Effects function in Filter menu, and selecting Floodlight to manipulate the image.

Flashlight Effect

The flashlight lighting effect is similar to the floodlight effect, but the light is more narrowly targeted on its object, as with the effect from a directional spotlight. Flashlight effect would be used for images to light parts of a body, for instance (the head), or a particular object in a room.

Lens Flare

Lens flare is a dynamic lighting effect navigated through Filter>Lighting Effects in Photoshop (for Mac). Lens flare creates the look of a reflected flash on a given image. In a photograph, you might encounter this result from taking pictures in front of a mirror, or when the sun reflects off an object in a photo. The intense flash (or flashes) of light in Lens Flare effect can be altered and multiplied in Photoshop. Digital art designers might use the lens flare effect for portraying astrological or mystical phenomena like solar eclipses or fireflies.

Ocean Ripple Effect

Ocean ripple effect is similar to pixilated effect in that it can make a subject look as though it's under water. This quality might come in handy for motion images that are imported into Adobe After Effects, to manipulate video files or to intensify objects taken in marine environments. In Photoshop, Ocean Ripple effect is navigated through Filter>Stylize>Glowing Edges, and going to Distort and selecting Ocean Ripple.

Blur Effects

Blur effects are ideal for giving images a cartoon quality. Different blurs (like Gaussian) are good for artists trying to achieve a Chiaroscuro effect, where darks and light contrasts in images or photographs contain high ranges. Blur effects and Chiaroscuro design can give images a dramatic feel.
