Cute Ideas for Self-Portrait Photography

Self-portrait photography is about a form of personal expression not only communicated through facial expressions but also through any other artistic flourishes added to the photograph. Holding the camera in one hand while shooting yourself with the other requires shooting only a very tight area; one big enough perhaps only for the upper body.

There are a number of ways that a photographer could express his culture through a photograph. The first involves a close-up shot on the face and a small piece of jewelry. Symbol necklaces such as Jewish stars, crosses, Allah pendants or Irish claddaghs are commonly worn in the United States. Attach the clasp of the necklace just behind your hair line with a piece of strong tape; the clasp will be out of the frame. Allow the pendant to hang over the face so that it falls to just below the forehead. Take a close-up shot of your face with the pendant. When editing, consider making the pendant the foreground while slightly blurring out the rest of the face.

In modeling parlance, a beauty shot is a close-up shot of the face and perhaps also the shoulders. Makeup artists and photographers often use all manner of makeup techniques and props to make a beauty shot stand out; you can do this at home fairly easily. Using eye shadow in a bright color creates a mask around the eyes. Select a bright lipstick in an unusual color like turquoise against a pale foundation. Draw a brightly-colored scarf around your hair. Use the expression in your eyes to communicate whatever message you want to send. If that message is mysterious or sad, avert your eyes so only your eyelids are visible.

Mounting a camera with a timer on a tripod allows you to take full-body shots of yourself. These shots can be site-specific; if you were in front of the Egyptian Museum or the pyramids, for example, select a "walk-like-an-Egyptian" pose. If communicating a state of mind rather than a place, photograph yourself in a position expressing that state. An arabesque, for example, could be a hopeful or wistful pose if the subject is dreamily looking off into the sky and the body is lifted as if about to take off. A broken doll pose might communicate sadness, anger or rebelliousness, depending on the facial expression worn by the subject.

Images also can be altered in photo editing software after the fact. Highlighting an object in the foreground while obscuring the background has already been discussed as a tool. Changing the color of an image is another tool for communicating through a self-portrait. If the photographer meant to communicate sadness or depression through an image, for example, choosing to grayscale that self-portrait will deprive it of color. If the self-portrait was meant to highlight the eyes, either brighten the eyes and/or change the contrast settings. These techniques sharpen or bring out the eyes on the image.
