Mastering a few artistic photography techniques is necessary to create unique art photography. Some photographs happen when the photographer is at the right place at the right time, but sometimes magical photographs require planning and the right equipment. A good digital camera, such as a DSLR, a tripod and an understanding of the different settings is required to achieve artistic photographs. Experiment with long exposures, panning shots and different settings on the camera.
Star Trails
Use a long exposure and a tripod on a clear night to create star trail photographs. Star trails are the light trails produced by the night sky stars as the Earth rotates. Exposure time can vary depending on the camera and the artistic concept of the photographer. Place a digital camera on a tripod in a dark area, such as a field away from city lights, and point the camera toward the sky. Use a 20 mm or a 24 mm lens and an exposure time of at least 30 minutes and up to 1 hour.
Light Painting
Use a tripod, a dark room and a laser pointer light to create unique light paintings. Set a camera for a long exposure and point the lens at an object in a darkened room. Press the shutter and use a laser pointer to "paint" the object by moving the light around the shape of the object. Experiment with different exposure times, such as 20 seconds to 60 seconds or as long as 2 minutes for intricate light drawings. Light painting can be achieved in an outdoor setting where the ambient light is very low.
Panning Shot
Panning photographs are achieved when a moving object is photographed against a blurred background. Photographs of moving cars and athletes where the subject is crisp and the background blurred are examples of panning photography. Use a tripod if practical and select a fast shutter speed, such as 1/40th of a second for bicyclists, runners and other athletes. Set the shutter speed between 1/100th and 1/200th of a second for speeding cars. Focus the camera on the subject and follow the subject with the camera.
Bokeh Effect
The bokeh effect is a blurred background with a stationary subject, such as flowers, birds or insects. Select a narrow depth of field by choosing aperture priority mode on a digital camera to automatically achieve a bokeh affect. Manual settings should be set to the widest aperture setting which is the lowest F-stop number setting. Start with an F-stop of 1.4 for a wide aperture and a shallow or narrow depth of field. Increase the F-stop number for a less blurred background.
