How to Illuminate Light Boxes

If you sell products online or in print, using a light box illuminated with full-spectrum lighting sources could mean the difference between a sold item and an unsold item. Proper light box illumination with full-spectrum lights results in product photography with saturated colors, diffused bright light, minimal shadows and clear details. According to the Lighting Research Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, "when color identification is part of the visual task... full-spectrum light sources will ensure good color discrimination." Illuminating a light box for product photography is not complicated, but it does take some precision and patience to get the lighting just right.

Instructions

    1

Purchase lighting supplies at a lighting store or local home improvement store. Full-spectrum light bulbs (also called "daylight bulbs") produce the best lighting with minimal shadows. The Lighting Research Center says "most full-spectrum light sources have high color rendering properties," which means objects lit with full-spectrum lights will show more saturated colors than objects lit with normal light bulbs. Clamp lights are ideal because they are easily mounted and adjusted for each photo shoot. To save money, use desk lamps, as long as they are adjustable.

    2

Cut large windows in the left and right sides of the light box and also cut a smaller flap window out of the top of the box. Cover the side windows with white translucent paper or fabric. Retain the structure of the box by leaving a 1-inch margin of cardboard or foam board around the perimeter of each window.

    3

Place a long piece of white poster board in the box and curve it up from the bottom of the light box to the back of the light box. Secure it in place with clear tape. This will hide the bottom seam in the back of the light box.

    4

Place clamp lights on the left and right sides of the light box, positioning the lights just outside the translucent material. Position a light source at the top of the box if desired. Adjust the clamp lights to illuminate the light box and minimize shadows. The camera flash should be sufficient lighting from the front, but if you need an additional light source, position a light in front of the light box.

    5

Test the lighting by photographing an object in the light box. If the light is too bright, position the clamp lights further away or readjust the camera flash. Bouncing the camera flash off the top of the light box will help properly illuminate objects. If the camera flash makes the photographs look too bright, simply turn the flash off for subsequent photographs.
