Tips on Photographing Senior Portraits

Senior portraits are an important milestone for young adults as well as their parents. These photograph sessions allow a student entering their senior year of high school to capture their personality and accomplishments on camera before graduation. Senior portraits are meant to capture the excitement that is a student's senior year of high school, and the milestones that are happening in his life.

When a photographer is setting up a senior portrait pose, he should consider the personality of the student he is photographing. A photographer should ask the subject questions about his likes, dislikes and activities at school. Photographers should do their best to make the student feel at ease, while experimenting with different poses. Try serious photographs as well as smiling, fun photographs. The goal should be to make the subject look as natural as possible, to best capture his personality in the photographs.

Photographers should provide seniors who come in for portraits with a list of clothing tips. Outfits should consist of a variety of mix-and-match pieces. Avoid bright patterns and brand names. Often, senior portraits are taken during the summertime, but seniors should avoid bringing an entire wardrobe of summery outfits. Bring jackets and long-sleeve tops that will match other pieces in your outfits so that there are a variety of seasonal options present in the photos. Students involved in sports should consider bringing a varsity letter jacket, or a sports uniform to highlight their interests and activities during their high school years.

Photographers should also warn seniors not to try out a brand new hairstyle just before having senior portraits done. A new hairstyle may make a senior student feel insecure or uncomfortable, and the goal is to feel as natural as possible. Photographers should have a variety of hair products on hand for seniors as well, such as brushes, combs, hair spray, hair gel and other styling tools to help them stay fresh during the entire photo shoot.

Taking the actual photograph is only half of the job for a photographer taking senior portraits. Photographers should also work hard to edit the senior portraits in a natural but beautiful way. Photographers should remember not to get too creative in the editing, as that can detract from the subject of the photograph. However, common editing techniques include skin blemishes and touch ups, turning a photograph black and white or giving the photograph a different hue all together.
