Biography of Jerry Uelsmann

Jerry Uelsmann is a photographer from Detroit, Michigan. He was born on June 11, 1934, and suffered from poor grades throughout his school life. After working as a wedding photographer, he obtained a degree from Rochester Institute of Technology and a master's from Indiana University. Uelsmann began his teaching career at the University of Florida in 1960, where he developed his unique styles. His first solo show was at the Museum of Modern Art in 1967.

Jerry Uelsmann's technique relies heavily on the concept of composite photography. He merges multiple negatives into one image using various darkroom tools and advanced printing technology.

Unlike other photographers doing similar work, Uelsmann's develops a final image that deals with allegorical commentary and surrealist imagery. One of his favorite subjects is the impossible and unfathomable.

Uelsmann primarily uses traditional photographic methods. He uses a number of different enlargers and analog equipment to get the desired effects in his prints. Jerry Uelsmann lives off of grants from artistic cooperatives and colleges rather than off of a regular commercial salary. His photographs routinely fetch thousands of dollars each at auctions.

Examples of his photography can be seen on the opening credits of "The Outer Limits" from 1995 and the 2003 album "Train of Thought" from the progressive metal band Dream Theater.
