Facts About Pinhole Cameras

A pinhole camera is a box that is entirely light-tight except for a tiny pinhole on one side. When the photographer opens the shutter, light passes through the pinhole and exposes the photo-sensitive paper on the other side of the box, creating an image.

Materials

Pinhole cameras can be made out of shoeboxes, oatmeal boxes, photographic paper boxes, and a variety of other boxes of different sizes.

Focal Length and Depth of Field

A pinhole camera with a longer distance between the pinhole and the photographic paper has a longer focal length and will show objects in closer focus than pinhole cameras with a shorter focal length. The longer the focal length, the less depth of field the image will have; in other words, less of the image area will appear in focus. If the distance between the pinhole and the paper is very short, more of the image will appear in focus.

Exposure Time

Pinhole cameras require long exposure times because they only allow light to pass through a very small area (a pinhole). You might need to keep the shutter open for a full minute to make a good exposure.

Warped Images

Pinhole images often appear warped around the edges in a circular shape when the paper is larger than the size of the projected image.

Camera Obscuras

Pinhole cameras create images directly onto photographic paper loaded into the camera in complete darkness.
