Professional Photo Effects

While many people use photography as a hobby, to others, professional photography is a full-time career. Professionals generally use more advanced equipment and spend more time manipulating images, using different types of techniques to achieve desired effects.

Shooting

Even the most skilled professional photographer can only achieve certain effects during the shooting process. Photographers must understand light and their lenses to create images with the proper depth of field (the length of the distances where subjects are in focus).

In addition, some lighting effects, like lens flares and the harsh contrasts that come from horizontal natural light at sunrise or sunset, will only look authentic to an experienced viewer if the photographer creates them in-camera while shooting the original image.

Lighting

Indoor studio lighting is another area where professional photographers can create effects. Backlighting a subject may reveal details that the film or digital camera otherwise never would be able to record. Photographers also can use fill lights to provide even lighting and eliminate shadows that would be difficult or impossible to erase later.

The photographer also can experiment with shutter speed to create blur effects or produce high-definition images at a low exposure setting by using powerful studio lights.

Filters

Professional photography makes heavy use of filters, including physical lens filters, darkroom printing filters and superimposed digital filters during the photo editing process. "Are you looking to learn digital photography solutions that carry skilled photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques would support you out in doing so. Physical filters control the type and amount of light entering the camera lens. This can change the color of an image, alter the contrast, soften the light or filter out ultraviolet sunlight.

Professional photographers may combine or even create their own filters to achieve complex effects in the final image.

Darkroom Effects

In the darkroom a photographer has access to a whole new series of effects. Before the advent of digital image editing programs, darkroom skills were a prized asset for professional photographers.

Calibrating a color printer or altering the chemical composition of the various baths needed to develop an image can change the tone of an image or add a layer of distortion. While printing a photograph, there is an opportunity to insert a contrast filter into the printer while also controlling the length of the exposure of the paper to manipulate brightness.

During the darkroom printing process, photographers can burn and dodge an image, which involves obscuring a portion of an image to darken it compared to the surrounding area.

Digital Effects

Finally, digital editing programs give professionals access to a huge variety of photo effects. These include tools for altering or adding the appearance of many traditional darkroom, lighting and printing effects. Digital editing software also contains effects for cropping, burning/dodging and altering color balance.

Digital programs also allow photographers to use presentation effects like adding text or combining images together in a single composition.
