Lighting in Fashion Photography

While it is true that a good photographer can capture a shot with a decent camera and sunlight, fashion and glamor photography is another story. It's a big business that demands proper lighting to draw attention to the clothing, makeup, hair or accessories being advertised. With some good equipment, editing software and lots of photo shoots, a beginning photographer can emulate the work found in fashion magazines.

Professional photographers spend a lot of time debating the finer points of fashion photography, but there are a few basics that can help a beginner to the field. Hot lights, which provide continuous light, are not typically used. Instead, strobe lights, which provide a bright flash of light, are common. Fashion photographers use modifiers such as umbrellas, soft boxes, reflectors, color gels and grid spots to change the quality of the light. With a beginner's setup of a couple of strong mono-lights, the photographer only needs stands, a flash meter and modifiers to work against the chosen background. Outdoor fashion photography requires weight to hold equipment in place.

Although flash lighting predominates the form, some photographers with huge budgets use large, powerful tungsten lights and HMI fresnel spots to create dramatic contrasts with light and shadow. The advantage of continuous lighting is a firmer sense of the shot. Some people argue that models work better with continuous lighting, because the bright flashing lights inhibits flow and relaxation. However, the equipment and power usage of high-end continuous lighting is too expensive for amateur photographers.

The benefits of an effective lighting setup extend beyond making a model look good. Fashion photographers create a variety of effects through manipulations of light, such as creating and eliminating shadows, spotlighting certain features, amplifying color, smoothing texture and creating a distinction between the foreground and background.
