Things Every Photographer Needs

Photographers need a fundamental sense of lighting and contrast to find ideal shots that will captivate viewers. However, some basic pieces of equipment are necessary for most photographers. Other equipment also becomes necessary if the photographer wants to take certain types of photos. Since photography can be expensive, photographers should choose their equipment carefully.

Camera

Photographers can choose between many types of cameras, including the 35mm film camera and the digital camera. One common camera is the Single Lens Reflex (SLR), which has replaceable lenses. The digital version of the SLR is called the DSLR, which stands for digital SLR camera. Sometimes photographers, such as sports photographers who need cameras that shoot at eight frames a second, have to buy more expensive cameras.

Lens and Filter

Photographers should put more money into lenses than in the camera, since paying more for the camera does not significantly improve the quality of the picture. The ideal type of lens depends on subjects the photographer wants to take pictures of. Event photographers usually want wide aperture lenses, while stabilized zoom lenses are ideal for wildlife photography.

Filters are crucial for handling large amounts of light. There are filterers designed for handling specific kinds of light, such as UV light.

Tripod

Cameras tend to blur pictures unless they're kept still, especially when the photo is shot at a slower speed. The tripod helps keep the camera steady. The tripod is inconvenient, but can significantly improve the quality of the shot. When using a tripod, the photographer must make sure he has enough space at the photo shoot to set it up.

Lighting

The flash illuminates the picture under dark conditions. Photographers should not use flash until they learn how to take pictures with the light available and work with natural light. However, those who dont have access to natural lighting or who want to create studio-quality photos should use artificial lights. Photographers might prefer artificial lights because natural lighting is not as consistent and very sunny days can create harsh shadows under the eyes, nose and chin.

Carrying Case

Photographers can carry pocket cameras around in their pockets. However, more expensive camera equipment needs to be carried around in a bag that can keep the equipment organized and safe. Photographers who only shoot out of their own studio will likely not need a bag.
