Revolutionary War paintings comprise of some of the world's famous paintings reminiscent of the events that marked the American Revolution. They offer you a journey back to the 18th century when the American War of Independence was declared against Great Britain. Most of them are priceless works of art owned by museums

"Washington Crossing the Delaware"

This is an oil canvas painting approximately 12 feet high and 21 feet wide done by Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze in Dusseldorf, Germany, in 1851. The painting depicts a scene at the battle of Trenton on December 26, 1776 when George Washington piloted his revolutionary army across the Delaware River to an ambush attack of the Hessian and British army. This revolutionary war painting became part of Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection in 2004.

"The Declaration of Independence"

This 21 by 31 inch oil painting illustrates the presentation of the first draft of the Declaration of Independence to the Second Continental Congress. It features the images of Roger Sherman, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson (presenting the document as its chief author), as well that of Benjamin Franklin. These men comprised the committee responsible for drafting the Declaration of Independence. Trumbull was asked to do the painting by the U.S. Congress in 1817. It is an enlarged adaptation of a smaller painting of approximately 18 by 12 inches, also by Trumbull, intended to preserve images of the nation's Founding Fathers.

George Washington's Portrait

Gilbert Stuart did this revolutionary war painting in 1796. It is a full-length portrait that depicts George Washington during the last year of his presidency. The portrait is famous for its natural artfulness due to its sketchy painting technique that Stuart had used. The painting hangs behind the Master's Chair of Fredericksburg Lodge in Virginia.

"Surrender of Lord Cornwallis"

This oil canvas painting on display at Rotunda Capitol, takes you back to the day the Revolutionary War ended. It depicts Lord Cornwallis on a horse, on the day the British Army surrendered to American Troops in 1781 at Yorktown in Virginia. It is one of two revolutionary paintings done by John Trumbull between 1819 and 1820. Both were based on a smaller painting of 20 by 30 inches, initially completed in 1785.
