Neutral Developers
Neutral Developers produce a wide range of tones in a photographic print and exhibit little or no influence in the tones' temperatures. The blacks will be a true black and the whites will be pure white.
Examples of neutral developers are Ilford's Multigrade developer and Kodak's Dektol developer.
Cool Tone Developers
As the name implies, these developers produce cool tones in the final print. The blacks and grays will exhibit a light blue color. This type of developer is ideal for imparting a cold feeling in viewers of the print and enhancing images of snow or cold settings. Cool tone developers are not popular among most photographers as a neutral or warm tone is favored.
Kodak's Dektol is an example of a cool or cold tone developer and will enhance the chilly tones of papers known for naturally producing cooler tones. Polymax-T is another Kodak product that produces cooler tones.
Warm Tone Developers
Warm tone developers impart a reddish-brown hue to blacks and grays in the final print. Strong warm tone developers create a sepia-like tone while others add only a hint of warmth to an image.
Ilford's Bromophen is an example of a warm tone paper developer.
Lower Contrast Developers
Lower contrast developers like Kodak's Selectol-Soft reduce the contrast in a print. This is useful in producing a wide range of gray tones in an image that exhibits high contrasts of only black and white. Many snow scenes produce high contrast prints with little detail, but by using a low contrast developer a photographer captures more detail by producing wide tonal range in the print.
