Fun and Easy Ideas for a Photography Club at School

Photography clubs enable camera enthusiasts to get together to socialize, compare work and learn about the art of photography. You can set a club up in your school with or without the active involvement of adults. Plenty of institutions nationwide boast such organizations. Photography clubs can keep costs low by utilizing easy and cheap ideas for meetings and field trips.

Have one person in the club organize this activity ahead of time. The organizer assembles a list of objects, locations or even animals that can be found within a specific location, such as a local park or even inside the school premises. Have the organizer give a copy to each hunt participant. Armed with cameras, participants head out around the location and attempt to snap a picture of as many items on the list as possible.

Each month, the photography club can hold a competition for best photograph. Collect donations from the membership for a small prize and offer that to the winner. Decide on a theme each month. For example, in December the theme could be Christmas scenes, while other themes can include pets, dramatic weather and sports. Have an impartial judge, such as a teacher, decide the winner.

Get in contact with a local expert, such as a photojournalist who works for a nearby newspaper, and invite her to give a talk to the group. This could take the form of a lecture or question-and-answer session one night after school. The expert could discuss camera tips and how to enter a career in photography.

A club field trip can remain relatively inexpensive if you do some research first. For example, a local museum with a photography exhibition may offer discounts to club members if you email the museum staff ahead of time. Share gas and other transportation costs among the members or pay for them via membership fees. A field trip can be as simple as traveling to a picturesque or interesting location near the school and taking snapshots there.

On a semiregular basis, or even every week, you could ask all the members to bring a photograph theyve taken for a group critique session. Conduct this critique with the intention of helping each member with his work, and don't make it competitive or mean-spirited. The idea is that members study the piece and suggest positive and negative points about it, perhaps leading to more general discussions about photography technique.
