Nighttime photography can be a lot of fun, but the first rule everyone needs to know is to bring a tripod. Because of the low light, photographers are forced to use slow shutter speeds and there is nothing worse than camera shake ruining a great photo. The good news is, you can leave your flash at home.
What makes nighttime photography so exciting is that it forces a photographer to use her imagination. A photographer has to be able to tell a story with just a few points of light.
If you want to have the most flexibility to take night shots make sure your camera has a bulb setting as a shutter speed; this will allow you to keep the shutter open for as long as you want. It is also important to have a shutter speed cable that you can lock.
Capturing the Stars
Taking pictures of the night sky takes a lot of patience. Not only do you have to wait for the right moment, which is a clear night sky, but your exposure will take about three hours.
On a clear night find a place that has absolutely no light. This can be difficult in the city, but it is necessary if this photo is going to turn out. Even a full moon could ruin the shot. With your camera on a tripod, point it up toward the North Star. It also helps to have an object at the bottom of the frame, like a group of trees because this will help to anchor the image. Adjust the shutter speed to the bulb setting and have an aperture of about F 5.8 or F 8; once you press the shutter button, lock it with the shutter cable and leave it for three hours. The North Star doesnt rotate so it should be relatively stable; however all the other stars should make different circles on the picture.
Write Your Name in Lights
As pointed out, a tripod is necessary for this exercise because you will once again be using the bulb setting. You will also need a sparkler or a glow stick because that is the light the camera will pick up. Similar to the exercise above, set your shutter speed to bulb with an F stop of about 5.6 or 8, and lock the shutter open. Move in front of the camera with your glow stick and start making designs in the air. Try writing your name. The designs made with the light will show up and you might also be able to see a ghost image of yourself.
Capture Fireworks
What is surprising about fireworks is that they are actually very bright and you dont need a slow shutter speed. The risk of using a slow shutter speed is that you will burn the image, which means the image is completely white. A good idea is to use the first few fireworks to get a light reading with your camera. A general guide, though, is about F 5.6 and 1/60 or even 1/90. After the first two fireworks, start shooting and experiment with different shutter speeds and apertures.
Using Light to Create Texture
Nighttime definitely adds a new element to your pictures and new texture to what could be another drag photo of a building. It is important to remember that the light metet in your camera monitors the average exposure of the viewfinder. When it comes to night photography, the camera senser will always be wrong because it is telling you what it takes to have a balanced exposure. At night a photographer does not want a balanced exposure because the light source will be too intense for the image. Instead, take a reading off the light source only. The image will start to fade the farther it is away from the light source, but that will add some texture, especially if lights are spaced equally around the building.
