How to Make a Collage in CS4

A collage is the perfect gift to mark the end of an important life stage by commemorating the most memorable moments on one page. Whether your making a collage for a friend to remember the fun you had in high school before moving on to University or to glorify an overseas adventure, Fireworks CS4 makes building a custom collage straightforward, the most difficult part being selecting which photos to include. Collages serve as an excellent custom computer background or as framed wall piece. How you decide to use the finished product is entirely up to you.

Instructions

Plan the collage by deciding which pictures you want to use, how big the collage needs to be to accommodate the selected pictures and the purpose of the collage. For instance, consider whether it is a gift, if you'll be framing it, printing it etc. Answer all of these questions in preparation for making the collage.

Open Fireworks CS4, click on "File" and select "New" to start a fresh project; a window will pop giving you the chance to set the dimensions of the project. Set the width, height and resolution for the collage to suit the desired parameters and click "OK" to create the collage template.

Click on "File," "Open" and select the photographs you want to include in the collage one by one. Open all the photographs you need. Click on the "Move" tool, found in the upper left corner of the tool tray and drag each image to its estimated finished location.

Click the "Crop" tool near the top left corner of the tool tray and click on an image you want to crop. Drag the crop window over the part of the image you want to keep, resize the window by clicking on a corner and dragging it away or toward the center of the window. Double click on the center of the crop window to commit the change. Repeat on other images in need of cropping.

Reorganize the pictures in the collage and set them to their final location on the blank page using the move tool. Right click on an image and select move forward or move backward to set the images in front or behind one another.

Click on an image with the move tool to highlight it, click "Command," "Creative" and select "Auto Vector Mask." Choose the preset fade direction from the "Auto Vector Mask" options window to fade the images into one another to create a seamless collage. Apply an "Auto Vector Mask" to all the images you want to fade.
