How to Make a Newborn Photo Prop From an Old Sweater

Different types of fabrics can be used as wraps or layers for photography props of newborns. Even old sweaters can be used for such purposes by simply wrapping or piling them up to create a visually appealing design. You can also overhaul them to create smaller props that are tailor-made for a newborn's photos. You can even turn crochet and cotton sweaters into smaller wraparounds or blankets to better fit the newborn's size.

Instructions

Baby Cover Prop

    1

Select the old sweaters that would look interesting to use for your planned poses and compositions for your shots. Check your sweater options if they have any damage in the zipper or any other part, which may not be safe to use with a newborn.

    2

Wash and dry your old sweater to make sure that it is safe and clean to use for the newborn.

    3

Place the baby's body inside the neck opening of the sweater, then wrap around the newborn with the other parts of the sweater to create layers.

Trench Bowl Cover Prop

    4

Choose one or more of your old sweaters to cover a trench bowl.

    5

Arrange the sweaters according to how you want them to appear as covers of the trench bowl.

    6

Place the newborn on top of your trench bowl cover. You may position the baby lying down or in any other preferred position based on your photography needs and preferred shot compositions and poses.

Wraparound Prop

    7

Select a sweater design and color that will match the wardrobe the mother will wear for the photo shoot.

    8

Mark the sweater according to the shape and size you want for your wraparound piece so it can better fit the baby being carried by the mother. This way, the fabric doesn't look like the actual jacket anymore. As a guide, a square three times the size of the newborn would be enough for a wrap-around effect.

    9

Cut the sweater to a smaller size based on your markings. You may add some fringe by tearing the sides for added effect. Alternatively, you may also sew the corners that were cut for a neat and clean look.

    10

Allow the mother to place the wraparound cloth around the baby's body including the head. Let the mother hold the baby with one hand on the wrap-round cloth, which covers the baby's head.
