Waves

Light travels in waves. As a beam of light moves forward, its photons oscillate, vibrating up and down or left and right at a certain speed. The distance the light travels between each vibration is called the wavelength and determines what color the light has. Light from most sources is not polarized. That means that at any moment some of the individual photons are vibrating horizontally, some vertically and some at any angle in between. This light all looks the same to the human eye.

Polarized light

Some light, however, is polarized. Some skylight is polarized, for example, but not all of it. Light reflected off of water and other shiny nonmetallic surfaces is also polarized, but the light that goes through these surfaces is not. If you look down into a shallow stream, the reflection you see on the surface is polarized light but the dimmer image you can see of the bottom of the stream is not polarized.

Polarizing Filters

A circular polarizing filter is designed to let light in which is polarized at a certain angle. In general, it selects for vertically polarized light. Light that is a few degrees off vertical will only be reduced slightly, but the further from vertical, the more the strength of the light will be reduced.

Effects of Polarizing Filters

Most of the glare from the surface of the water is polarized horizontally. When you shine a circular polarizing filter at the surface, it will almost entirely eliminate the reflection, allowing you to see past the surface of the water. Polarizing filters also improve pictures of the sky. They remove a lot of the bright white light, giving the sky a deeper, bluer color. Light that passes through clouds is scattered by the water droplets, and comes out non-polarized. The polarizing filter reduces the background glare from the sky while allowing most of the light from the clouds through, creating sharper and more striking images.
