Types

An image histogram plots the number of pixels in a digital image against a value of brightness. The left size of the graph represents black and dark areas and the right represents light and white areas. A well-exposed image should show peaks along the full range. A color histogram represents the distribution of a particular color (such as red, green or blue) throughout an image.

Significance

Working with image histograms is similar to working with an enlarger in a darkroom in film photography, where a photographer could adjust the image's exposure to light to accommodate for over and underexposure in the original negative.

Function

An image histogram allows a digital editor to see the brightness and contrast of an overexposed, underexposed or "flat" image and make adjustments to improve the image.

Features

An editor or photographer can adjust a histogram, either manually or using an automatic computer fix, to even out stark highlights or blackened shadows, or to heighten the emphasis on a particular color or tone.

Fun Fact

Some digital cameras include image histograms to help a photographer check an image's exposure instantly in tricky lighting situations.
