How to Dress for Winter Photography

No matter the photographer or subject, dressing for a winter photo shoot requires layering up and covering extremities. Winter photography typically includes shooting in cold locales on snow-covered landscapes. Photographers need to stay warm enough to maneuver equipment and focus on directing subjects while those being photographed need to wear functional attire that provides both warmth and fashion. You can prepare for cold-climate photography and the potential for inclement weather during a shoot by wearing layers of clothing that insulate your body and keep it warm and dry.

Instructions

    1

Put on thermal underwear as your bottom layer of clothing. This includes a thermal long-sleeve shirt and thermal pants. Thermal clothing keeps your body dry and should fit snug to your body. Subjects of fashion shoots might consider wearing button-up thermal shirts to prevent ruining hair and make-up with over-the-head attire, and can don elastic-waist thermal pants that pull off quickly for wardrobe changes.

    2

Dress in a button or zip-up wool sweater, flannel shirt, fleece sweatshirt or fleece vest to insulate your top half and elastic-waist flannel or fleece-lined pants for your bottom half. This second layer of clothing holds in warmth. Pack jeans or cotton clothing to change into for a fashion shoot, if necessary, but wearing them ahead of time will make you feel cold because they absorb moisture.

    3

Wear a water-resistant baggy outer layer with pockets that consists of a winter ski jacket that zips up the front for quick removal and snowboarding pants with an elastic waist and wide leg openings for pulling up or down quickly over fashion boots or shoes. The pockets provide storage for equipment or small fashion items such as hats, mittens and jewelry. This layer protects the model's clothing for the shoot and protects the photographer's body from wetness when crouching or laying in snow to shoot at a particular angle. Photo-shoot subjects can also wear water-resistant outer layers over pants and tights and under skirts when moving between locations.

    4

Pull wool knee socks up under your thermal underwear, and bring an extra pair just in case the pair youre wearing gets wet. Subjects can wear fashion socks or tights under wool socks and can pull wool socks off when the shoot begins. Don water-resistant winter boots that have traction for safe walking, climbing and posing. Models might consider wearing boots without laces for quick removal.

    5

Wear waterproof gloves to grip camera equipment or props. Subjects can keep fashion mittens that match hats and scarfs in jacket pockets to change into, if necessary. Sport a winter hat or headband that covers your ears, if you are a photographer. Models should wear earmuffs to prevent messing up hairdos, unless the hat or headband is part of the modeling outfit. Fashion subjects should wrap a scarf around their necks instead of using a neck gaiter because neck gaiters pull over the head, potentially ruining hair and make-up. Photographers can wear a ski mask to keep the face warm. They can fold these into a hat, providing them with peripheral views, if necessary. Add hand and foot warmers inside gloves and socks to keep extremities warm.
