How to Make Photos Hazy

Photographers use many techniques to produce a soft focus; this is often used in fashion photography and portraiture. These techniques can produce many effects, including a hazy or blurry background with the subject in sharp focus or softening an entire frame.

Instructions

Attach a clear filter over the end of your lens. Gently smear petroleum jelly onto the filter; a very light layer will produce a hazy effect. By using the jelly only on the outside portion of the lens, you can produce a sharp central image surrounded by a hazy background.

Stretch nylon from pantyhose tightly over the end of the lens and fasten it with a rubber band. Different shades will produce different effects and lighter or darker images. You can also cut or burn holes in the nylon to produce interesting techniques.

Purchase soft-focus filters. These simply screw on to the end of your lens and automatically add a soft focus while allowing you to focus as usual.

Switch to a larger aperture, such as f/2. This will create a shallow depth of field and effectively haze out everything except the subject you are focusing on. By focusing on the background, you can create a hazy effect for your subject in the foreground.
