What Lights Are Good for Indoor Photography?

Shooting photographs indoors is one of the most difficult photography skills to master. It takes a lot of trial and error to figure out what works well with your environment and camera. You should avoid using any artificial lighting already present in the room and opt to use only halogen lights to clear away shadows from your subject while still illuminating the background. With the help of artificial lighting and reflectors, you can manipulate the reflection and refraction of unavoidable indoor artificial light or outdoor light that may be pouring in. Natural light, when used alone, is sometimes a good source of indoor lighting.

Manual Settings

Disable the auto white balance feature on your camera and manually set a custom white balance. A camera will default to the auto setting, so remember to switch it to manual to enable control over the white balance -- but once you set a manual white balance, you can switch back and forth from auto to manual and the camera will "remember" the manual white balance setting. Auto should be used in situations where the light can be controlled; indoor environments have light imbalances that cause images to be littered with shadows or blacked out completely. To manually set the white balance, have a model hold a grey card and take a picture of the card (fill the frame with just the card) with your camera set to auto. Make sure the image is properly exposed, bring the image up in your digital monitor and bring up the menu. Most digital cameras will have a menu option that allows you to set that image as your custom white balance setting. Your next step will be to open your camera's aperture to its maximum to allow for the most light possible to enter.

Halogen Lights

One of the best sources of indoor lighting is halogen lights. They're relatively inexpensive and can be manipulated to varying degrees of intensity. Eliminate, as best as possible, any existing artificial or natural light when using halogens. Halogen lights offer bright and balanced white light to cover the subject. They will appear unnecessarily bright to your eye but, when exposed, the bright light will yield a shadow-free image with a focused subject and a clear background. Most photography supply stores carry different sizes of halogen lights on metal stands that can be adjusted for height. You'll need at least one bright halogen and one slightly smaller, soft halogen light.

Positioning Lighting

Regardless of what kind of lighting you use, the only way to get clear photos is with a group of well-placed lights and reflectors. Place your subject in front of a flat, white background if possible. Avoid shooting near objects that create shadows, such as furniture. Place your main lighting source (a bright halogen light) at a 45-degree angle from your subject. Behind your subject (but not in the frame), place a soft halogen light to eliminate shadows, then use a reflector directly in front of your subject to bounce white light back onto your subject. You can purchase professional reflectors at photography supply stores or just use a piece of white cardboard or even a white sheet.

Using Natural Light

In certain situations, natural light can be manipulated and used to get a balanced, good-looking shot. You'll almost always have to give in to the fact that natural light will create a shadow either on, behind, or beside your subject. To use natural light, position your subject so it's facing the natural light and shoot the subject straight on, without flash. The dimmer the natural light is, the softer the image will appear but you'll have to dramatically reduce the shutter speed on your camera to get a focused image. The result will be a soft illumination on the face of your subject and a strong shadow behind it. Natural light is a simple way of creating dramatic portraits.
