How to Create a Cubism Photo

Cubism is a 20th-century artform, developed by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque between 1907 and 1914. It involves the incorporation of geometric shapes to create an abstract or distorted picture. Although traditionally cubism is a painted or drawn method, artists can create a cubist photograph by the use of a montage. This can work with any subject, creating an interesting and effective piece of artwork. Artists can choose whether to place the individual photos into a rectangle or into a shape of their choice.

Instructions

Choose a scene for your photo. Think about how you will use the image to create your final piece.

Take numerous, overlapping photos of the scene. Think about how each photo will play a role in the artwork and what shape you want to make the composition.

Place a person in the scene, if you wish. The person can move around, provided he does not stand in a place near where he was previously. Alternatively, position the person in one place, where he should remain still.

Print the photos out on matte photographic paper. Glossy paper is more likely to show fingerprints when handled.

Tape the photos down temporarily to decide where each should lie, overlapping and placing them at angles, as you wish. Change the positions of the photographs until you are happy with the result. Affix the photos to the display with rubber cement.
