Photography can be an art form, whether it is amateur or professional. Photographers often use different types of composition to enhance a picture. Using compositions involves trying to highlight various aspects of the subject in an effort to have the viewer see it from a different perspective.

A Picture in Thirds

One type of composition is known as "thirds." The photographer pictures the shot in a grid made up of two equally spaced lines from top to the bottom and two equally spaced from left to right. This turns the picture into nine smaller pictures or "thirds." This allows the most important aspects of the picture to be placed where the photographer wants them.

Balance in a Frame

Another method of composition is called "balance." Photographers can place the object they are photographing away from the center of the picture. It is sometimes recommended to place another object in the space that is left empty. For example, a picture of a child that is sitting in the upper left portion of the picture can be counter balanced by placing a toy or a pet in the lower right of the picture.

Leading the Eye

Viewer's eyes often follow lines or paths contained in a picture. These paths can be used to lead the eyes to the real object the photographer wants highlighted. An example of this type of composition is a kite string that leads the eyes first to the string then all the way up to the kite hovering in the sky.

Various Patterns

Photographers often try to capture the inherent symmetry of objects. Some examples of this are faces, table settings, spider webs and birds flying in a "v" formation. Sometimes, broken patterns are captured, such as a smile with a missing front tooth.

Point of View

Point of view is another form of composition used to show different perspectives. "Do you want to understand digital photography methods that carry skilled photographers to where they are today? For example, the point of view of a child looking up at a very large object or person. The opposite viewpoint is also used of a tall person looking down on something that is smaller in size. This technique can also be used to show a far away viewpoint as opposed to one that is very close up to the subject of a photo.

Frame within a Frame

An object being "framed" by another object is a method of composition called framing. An example of this is a picture taken of a person standing in front of an archway. Not only will he be framed by the four corners of the picture, he has the additional natural frame of the archway as well.

Photo Cropping

Small objects that are meant to be the center of attention in a picture sometimes get lost among larger objects. Photographers can employ a composition method known as cropping to bring the main focus on these smaller objects. For example, a picture of a button may get lost on a colorful shirt. The photographer can crop or cut the picture to show the button with only a little part of the shirt around it.
