How to Do an HDR Photo of Moving Objects

High Dynamic Range, or HDR, images typically combine multiple exposures of a single composition to create an image with a large tonal range. Because multiple exposures of a single scene are required for true HDR imagery, moving objects within the composition will be blurry or appear at multiple positions in the final image. However, by creating several images with different exposure data from a RAW file, you can create a pseudo HDR image using a single exposure which can contain both moving and stationary subjects.

Instructions

Record the Image

    1

Set your camera to record in RAW format. In some cameras, like Nikons DSLR series, press the Zoom button to enter the configuration menu, select QUAL and set the image quality to RAW. In other cameras, like Canon models, enter the menu screen, select the camera setup menu, select Quality and then select RAW from the list of options.

    2

Set the camera on a tripod if you are using one. Since you are only taking one exposure, you can get by without a tripod if you are using a fast shutter speed. If you are using a slow shutter speed, use a tripod or turn on any image stabilization or vibration reduction options for your camera model.

    3

Compose the shot and press the shutter button to record the image.

Create the Pseudo HDR Composition

    4

Open the RAW file using your RAW conversion utility. Canon, Nikon and Sony DSLR cameras are bundled with utilities that convert RAW to other image formats, and Adobe Camera RAW also supports many camera RAW formats.

    5

Export the image as a TIFF file. If the utility doesnt support TIFF format, export the image as a JPEG file in the highest quality available.

    6

Adjust the exposure compensation to "+2" and export the image again.

    7

Adjust the exposure compensation to "-2" and export the image again.

    8

    Launch your graphics program.

    9

Start a new HDR composition. In Photoshop CS5, click File, Automate and Merge to HDR Pro from the menu. In Picturenaut 3, click File and Generate HDRI. In Photomatrix, click Generate HDR Image from the quick-launch bar.

    10

Select the three TIFF or JPEG files that you created in Steps 3 to 5 and click OK to import them into your program. If you are using Photoshop CS5, a dialog window appears, prompting you to check or uncheck images to include in the final HDR composition.
