How to Make a Flash Diffuser Using a File Folder

On-camera flashes are handy for adding additional light to a scene. By nature, these flashes are small, yet strong, and effectively serve as point-light sources. Harsh shadows and sharp highlights are natural by-products of point sources, often not an effect that flatters a subject. To allow diffuse light, many accessory flashes have heads that tilt for bouncing off ceilings or walls. This is a partial solution, but often directing some light forward is also desirable. A file folder serves as raw material for an inexpensive homemade flash modifier.

Instructions

    1

Cut a rectangular shape from your file folder about one inch wider than your flash unit and about 10 inches in length.

    2

Overlap four inches of the cut shape around your flash unit in the ceiling bounce position. Use the elastic bands to fasten it in place on the back of the flash, wrapping about a half an inch around each side for greatest strength.

    3

Bend the top of the cut shape between 30 and 45 degrees toward the subject to re-direct and diffuse the flash output forward. If your camera uses through-the-lens metering for flash, exposure will compensate automatically. Without the TTL function, add two stops of exposure as a starting point.
