There are many rules and tips regarding photographic composition. In the end, it is up to the photographer to determine which rules to follow, or not, to get the best photo. While there are no official rules, there are some general guidelines to keep in mind. Most professionals do adhere to these rules.
Rule of Thirds
Divide the image into nine equal squares. This is done by imaging two vertical and two horizontal lines on the image. Some cameras even have this feature built in. Place the most important elements of the photo on the intersection points of two of the lines. This helps balance the photo better.
Balancing
Using the rule of thirds helps create an interesting photo, but can leave a large part of the photo void of anything. This can make the side with the focal point feeling heavy. Balance out the other side of the image by including something less prominent in it.
Cropping
Cropping is an essential part of photos. Cropping determines what will actually be in the photo. For example, a long shot of two people standing face to face is not particularly dramatic and the viewer may not even be able to tell their expressions. However, if the photo is taken at an extremely close point, or cropped up close, the feel of the image is very different. The expressions of both parties are much clearer, and the photo has more emotion.
Background
The background of the photo can add or detract significantly. The background should be used primarily to draw attention to the foreground or main subject, rather than take attention away from it. For example, photographing someone in front of multicolored material or many other people draws attention away from that person. Instead use a solid, neutral background.
Symmetry
Symmetry can be used in a variety of ways to create interesting photos. Look for symmetry where it is not obvious. Such as in nature. For example, two trees that look identical can makes for a unique photo. Symmetry can also be quite boring, think of a government building. In cases where symmetry is less than enthralling, consider adding an element to throw off the symmetry of the photo. For example, a person on one side of the symmetrical object.
Leading Lines
Lines are what draw people's attention in photos. Humans naturally look for the lines in pictures. The lines can pull the viewer in, toward an object. Be mindful of the lines in the photo and the effect they have on the viewer.
