How to Take Pictures of Cards or Postcards

Flat subjects, such as pictures, posters, or cards, are difficult to photograph in an appealing way because they are usually above or below eye level. As a result these objects will always appear warped in pictures that are taken of them. Also, flat subjects often have a glossy coating that reflects light. In a photograph the reflected light appears as blank white space that obscures part of the subject. Both of these problems can be solved by adjusting the position of the subject and available lighting. Instructions

    1

Apply a small amount of reusable adhesive putty to each corner of the card or image you want to photograph.

    2

Attach the card to a wall at eye level using the adhesive putty on the back. Ideally, the wall should be in a room with no windows. If that is not possible, try shooting the picture at night.

    3

Set up the tripod five to seven feet away from the image.

    4

Screw the camera onto to the tripod via the tripod socket on the bottom of the camera body.

    5

Adjust the height of the tripod so that the lens of the camera is level with the middle of the image on the wall. Adjust the angle of the camera so that the lens is parallel to the image on the wall. If the image is in portrait orientation set the camera to portrait orientation and adjust it's position to the image.

    6

Position one photo flood light or torchiere floor lamp on each side of the image and turn the lights on. They should be shining slightly above the image and either directly at the sides or slightly closer to the camera than the image. Photo flood lights should be pointing directly at each other.

    7

Turn off all other lights and look through the camera's view finder. Focus the camera and check the surface of the image. If you see glare or reflection, adjust the position of the lights and the camera until the surface of the image is clear.

    8

Set the camera's aperture and shutter speed to accommodate your lighting conditions.

    9

    Take the picture.
