Tricks & Tips for Digital Effects for Nature Photographers

Nature photography is not the easiest type of photography to master but it is possible to learn the skill with practice and patience. To help control the elements around you, learn to use a few editing tricks that will have you experimenting with a variety of digital photo-editing effects. Digital effects will give your photos an artistic feel while giving you an edge and making learning a bit easier.

Photo coloring effects will add a punch to your work that will really make it stand out. Use this effect to take all of the color out of an image except for a certain part or to add a blast of color to bring an entire image to life. Examples include coloring only the leaves of a tree to bring their vibrant colors to life or adding blue to a photo of the sky.

Adding a depth-of-field effect to an image will bring one part of the image into focus and make the rest of the image a bit blurry. This effect is ideal for taking photos of a particular subject such as a tree, mountain or animal. You will notice a much more professional and complete look to your images when applying the effect.

Cross-Processing is an effect that adds tone and light to an image. The effect is ideal for bringing out grey and black shadows and light colors such as blue, pink and yellow. Use this effect the next time you work with an image of a sunset to really make it come to life. When only certain colors of the image get toned up, the darker images are made to look like they have more depth and character.

Adding a retro effect to a nature image will make it appear as though it was shot long ago. This adds an artistic feel to the image and makes it look unique. The main goal of this effect is to fade out the image a bit while adding a bit more depth to dark areas. The effect also adds a light grey, almost transparent, hazy edge around images. Adding the retro effect also helps to hide imperfections in images. Every photographer will have one image that has just the right natural scenery but the colors may be a bit off. Hide that issue with this effect by making any color problems look artistic and planned.
