Film comes in many different varieties, two of which are 35mm and 4X5 inch. These film sizes load into different sized cameras and have dramatically different quality. In a nutshell, 4x5 film yields a better picture, but it is more expensive and more difficult to use. It is also less common, which means there are fewer cameras that take it.
Landscape Photography
The dominant film choice for landscape photography is 4X5 film. This is because it can show so much detail. Since the negative is 4-by-5 inches, it can be blown up several times larger than a 35 millimeter negative can. Indeed, a contact print alone (without any enlargement) will be the size of a standard photo. This means that landscapes can be blown up to large sizes, thus showing the grand scale of the subject matter without losing significant details.
Focus
If an amateur is using a 4X5 camera, then quality can deteriorate due to focus. This is because it is more difficult to focus 4X5 cameras (as they have old-fashioned bellow systems) than it is to focus 35mm cameras, which have either autofocus functions or focus adjustment dials.
Shutter Speed
A 35mm camera can take much faster shutter speeds than a 4X5 camera can. This is because large format cameras have longer lenses. This means that it takes more time for light to travel through to the film. If the shutter is not open for long enough, then the film will be underexposed. So, quality can suffer if you are taking pictures of moving objects with 4X5 camera -- the slow shutter speed means that blur is more likely to occur.
Zoom
A large format camera has to have the film far away from the subject matter just to maintain a proper exposure. This means that zoom is basically impossible. If you were to attach a zoom lens to a 4X5 camera, you would need such long shutter speeds that the image will be too dramatically affected by blur. So, if you are taking pictures of things that are far away (such as celebrities on vacation), then a 35mm camera will provide the highest-quality image.
